Brisbane’s event calendar peaks in September with the Brisbane Festival and Riverfire, but the city hosts major events year-round from the Ekka agricultural show in August to the Brisbane International tennis tournament in January.
Brisbane Festival and Riverfire (September)
Brisbane Festival is a month-long arts and culture festival running through September, with 500+ performances across theater, music, dance, circus, and visual arts. Venues span South Bank, QPAC, and the Brisbane Powerhouse. Many events are free. The festival’s climax is Riverfire (Sunsuper Riverfire), a 30-minute fireworks and aerobatic display over the Brisbane River on the first or second Saturday of September, drawing 500,000 spectators. Prime viewing spots along the South Bank riverfront, Kangaroo Point cliffs, and the Story Bridge fill by 3:00 PM. The RAAF Super Hornets and Army helicopters conduct flyovers starting around 5:30 PM before the 7:00 PM fireworks. For weather during the festival, check the Brisbane weather guide.
The Ekka (Royal Queensland Show) (August)
The Ekka is Queensland’s largest annual event, running for 10 days in August (typically the second Friday to the following Sunday) at the Brisbane Showgrounds in Bowen Hills, 2km north of the CBD. It’s an agricultural show with livestock competitions, woodchopping, carnival rides, and the famous Ekka strawberry sundaes. Adult admission AUD 35-40. Open 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM. The showgrounds are served by Exhibition station on the rail network (special services during Ekka) and bus routes. The public holiday for the Ekka (Show Day, usually the Wednesday) means many businesses close in Brisbane. Book accommodation early; the show draws 400,000 visitors.
Brisbane International Tennis (January)
The Brisbane International is an ATP/WTA tennis tournament held in early January at the Queensland Tennis Centre in Tennyson, 10km south of the CBD. It serves as a warm-up for the Australian Open. Tickets range from AUD 30 (early rounds) to AUD 150+ (finals). Sessions run day (10:00 AM) and night (6:30 PM). Train to Yeerongpilly station then a shuttle bus. The tournament draws top players and is a highlight of Brisbane’s summer sports calendar despite the January heat.
Brisbane Comedy Festival (May-June)
The Brisbane Comedy Festival runs for 6 weeks from late May through June at the Brisbane Powerhouse in New Farm, plus satellite venues. It features 100+ Australian and international comedians. Individual show tickets from AUD 25-60. The Powerhouse, a converted 1920s power station, has a riverside bar popular before and after shows. CityCat ferry to New Farm Park terminal, then a 10-minute walk.
Paniyiri Greek Festival (May)
Paniyiri is Australia’s largest Greek cultural festival, held over a weekend in mid-May at Musgrave Park in South Brisbane. It features Greek food, dancing, honey puffs (loukoumades), and plate smashing. Entry AUD 12 adult. The festival draws 60,000 visitors. Musgrave Park is a 10-minute walk from South Bank station. The event began in 1976 and is a Brisbane institution.
