The Canton Fair (China Import and Export Fair) is the world’s largest trade fair, held at the 1.18 million-square-meter Canton Fair Complex in Pazhou since 1957. It runs in three phases of 5 days each: Phase 1 (electronics, machinery), Phase 2 (consumer goods), Phase 3 (textiles, food). Registration requires a passport and business card; the fair is for trade visitors only. Hotel prices across Guangzhou surge 50-100% during fair dates. Metro line 8 to Pazhou Station. Even if you’re not attending, avoid visiting during these dates due to inflated costs.
Spring Festival Flower Fair (Three Days Before Chinese New Year)
The Guangzhou Spring Festival Flower Fair fills designated streets in each district with flower and kumquat tree stalls for three days before Chinese New Year’s Eve (January/February). The largest fairs are on Xihu Road in Yuexiu District and Jiaoyu Road. They run 8:00 AM until midnight, peaking on New Year’s Eve. Free entry. Expect dense crowds. Dragon Boat Festival (June, 5th Day of 5th Lunar Month)
The Dragon Boat Festival (Duanwu Jie) features races on the Pearl River and in multiple districts. The main Guangzhou International Dragon Boat Invitational takes place near Ersha Island with 100+ teams over a weekend. Free viewing from riverbanks; arrive by 8:00 AM. Zongzi (sticky rice dumplings) are sold everywhere. The festival falls during the rainy season; bring sun protection and an umbrella.
Mid-Autumn Festival (September/October, 15th Day of 8th Lunar Month)
The Mid-Autumn Festival brings mooncakes, lantern displays in Yuexiu Park and at the Canton Tower plaza, and decorated Pearl River night cruises. It often overlaps with the October National Day holiday, creating a domestic tourism surge. Book hotels and train tickets well in advance if traveling during this period.
Guangzhou International Light Festival (November)
The Guangzhou International Light Festival runs for two weeks in November, transforming the Canton Tower, Haixinsha Island, and Flower City Square with large-scale light installations and 3D projection mapping.
