Margaret River is a wine, surf, and forest region on Western Australia’s southwest coast, a three-hour drive south of Perth, where more than 200 wineries and four limestone show caves sit within a 50 km strip between two lighthouses. The region has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate, with mild 2°C (7°F) summers and wet winters that drop 209 mm of rain in July. This Margaret River travel guide covers the weather, beaches, food, and places to stay in one place.

Welcome to Margaret River

You come to Margaret River for four things: cabernet and chardonnay, big surf, ancient caves, and long empty beaches. The town of about 5,000 people is the commercial hub, but the region spreads across Yallingup and Dunsborough to the north and Augusta to the south, all linked by the scenic Caves Road. Because the Indian Ocean sits right on the coast, the region stays mild all year, which is exactly why both the vines and the surf breaks thrive here.

Margaret River Weather at a Glance

The region has a Koppen Csb warm-summer Mediterranean climate. Summer highs in January and February average 2°C (7°F), and the sea reaches 2°C to 2°C (7°F to 7°F), warm enough for swimming at the sheltered Geographe Bay beaches. Winters are mild but wet: July averages 209 mm of rain and a high of just 1°C (6°F).

Annual rainfall totals around 1,100 mm, and nearly all of it falls between May and August, while sunshine runs the other way, from about 11 hours a day in January to 5 hours in July. For the full month-by-month numbers, see the breakdown in the plan below.

Margaret River Seasonal Snapshot

  • Summer (December to February): dry and sunny with highs of 2°C (7°F) and a 2°C sea; peak prices and crowds over Christmas and New Year
  • Autumn (March to May): warm 2°C days and a 2°C sea in March, then rain arrives in May; the grape harvest and the Margaret River Pro land in April
