Sao Luis is the capital of Maranhao, a coastal city in northeast Brazil with a UNESCO-listed colonial centre, a 15 km beachfront and year-round temperatures between 23 and 34 degrees Celsius. Rainfall splits the year in two: a wet season from January to July and a dry season from August to December. This guide links to seven detailed articles covering the monthly weather, the best time to visit, things to do, events, neighbourhoods, where to stay and practical travel tips.
Welcome to Sao Luis
Sao Luis sits on an island between Sao Marcos Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, connected to the mainland by bridge. The city of about 1.1 million people was founded by the French in 1612, named after King Louis XIII, then ruled in turn by the Portuguese and, briefly, the Dutch. Its historic centre, added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1997, holds roughly 3,500 colonial buildings, many covered in blue and white Portuguese azulejo tiles. Beyond the old town, the beach districts of Calhau, Sao Marcos and Ponta d’Areia run north along the coast, and the city serves as the main gateway to Lencois Maranhenses National Park.
