Guwahati is the largest city in Assam and the gateway to Northeast India, spread along the south bank of the Brahmaputra River. It serves a dual role: a working regional capital of about a million people and a pilgrimage and safari hub, with Kamakhya Temple on its western hill and one-horned rhinos within an hour’s drive. The city has a humid subtropical climate with a short, dry, mild winter from November to February, a hot pre-monsoon in April and May, and a heavy monsoon from June to September that dumps about 1,750 mm of rain a year.
Welcome to Guwahati
Guwahati sits at 26.14°N and about 55 metres above sea level, where the Brahmaputra is at its widest, up to several kilometres across. The city is old, its name deriving from guwa (areca nut) and hati (market), and it has been a trading post since at least the Ahom kingdom. Today it is the jump-off point for Kaziranga National Park, Shillong, and the hill states of the Northeast, and a destination in its own right for the Kamakhya Temple pilgrimage and daily river cruises.
