Pai is a small town in Mae Hong Son Province in northern Thailand’s mountains, about 135 km (84 miles) northwest of Chiang Mai, reached over the 762-curve Highway 1095. Its elevation of roughly 510 m (1,670 ft) gives it a climate unlike the rest of Thailand: cool, dry winters from November to February, a scorching hot season from March to May, and a green monsoon from May to October. The town is best known for its waterfalls, hot springs, canyon viewpoints, and a nightly walking-street market, and it draws a mix of backpackers, digital nomads, and Thai weekenders.
Weather in Pai at a Glance
Pai averages about 1,297 mm of rain a year, almost all of it falling between May and October. The dry season runs a full six months, from November through April. December and January are the coolest months, with average lows of 14.5°C (58°F) and highs around 29 to 31°C (84 to 88°F), and cold snaps can push mornings down to 5 to 8°C (41 to 46°F). April is the hottest month at 38.9°C (102°F) on average.
The two things that catch visitors off guard are the cold nights in the cool season and the burning-season smoke from late February to March, when crop fires in northern Thailand haze over the valley. If you want clear mountain views, aim for November to January.

Hot and Hazy (March to May)

The monsoon greens up the rice fields and fills the waterfalls, with short heavy afternoon storms. It’s the cheapest and quietest time to visit, and mornings usually stay clear.
