Dunhuang is an oasis city in northwestern Gansu province, China, where the old Silk Road met the eastern edge of the Gobi desert. It is known for the Mogao Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage site of Buddhist murals and sculpture, and for a cold desert climate that delivers about 40 mm of rain and more than 3,100 sunshine hours a year.
Welcome to Dunhuang
The first thing to plan around is the desert climate: hot dry days and cold nights, with the biggest temperature swing of any city on the Gansu route. The city itself is compact and walkable, built around the Shazhou Night Market on Yangguan East Road, and the Mogao Caves and Mingsha sand dunes are short drives away. Most visitors spend two to three days here.
