Dali is a lakeside city in Yunnan, China, built at 1,976 metres (6,480 ft) between Erhai Lake and the Cangshan range. Daytime highs stay between 13°C (55°F) in January and 22.6°C (73°F) in June, and most of the city’s 1,333mm of annual rain falls from May to October. This guide covers the weather, the best neighbourhoods and the practical details for planning a trip, with links to the full breakdown of each topic.
Welcome to Dali
Most visits begin at the old town’s South Gate, and from its wall you can read the whole geography of Dali at once: Erhai Lake stretching east and the 19 peaks of Cangshan rising west. The city has been a trading and pilgrimage stop for more than a thousand years, and the Bai minority still shape its festivals, food and white-washed courtyard architecture. Spend your first half-day on foot in the old town, then pick between the lake, the mountain and the villages for the rest.
Dali Weather at a Glance
Dali has a mild subtropical highland climate, which in practice means cool, clear, dry winters and warm, cloudy, wet summers. January averages 7.7°C (46°F) and June averages 18.4°C (65°F), so the seasonal swing is only about 11°C. The monsoon arrives in May and peaks in July with 284mm of rain and 86% humidity, then fades by October. December is the driest month with 16mm and April is the sunniest with 9.4 hours of sun a day.
Because the town sits at 1,976 metres, the sun is strong and the air is thin. UV is high year-round, nights are cool even in summer with lows around 15°C (59°F), and it rarely freezes or gets hot. The practical takeaway: pack layers, a rain shell for May to October, and sunscreen in every season.

Location and Geography
Dali lies in western Yunnan, about 300 km west of Kunming and 150 km south of Lijiang, on a plateau between Erhai Lake, one of Yunnan’s largest freshwater lakes at roughly 250 square kilometres, and the Cangshan range, whose highest peak, Malong, reaches 4,122 metres. The lake tempers the climate and feeds the cloud that builds against the mountains in summer, which is why the city’s wet and dry seasons are so pronounced.
