Kunming, the capital of Yunnan province in southwestern China, is known as the “City of Eternal Spring” for its year-round mild climate. At 1,890 metres (6,200 feet) above sea level, the city enjoys a subtropical highland climate with average daytime temperatures ranging from 15C (59F) in winter to 24C (75F) in summer. Unlike most of China, Kunming has no bitter winters or oppressive summers. The trade-off is a distinct wet season from June through September when the southwest monsoon delivers 80% of the annual 1,000mm (39 inches) of rainfall, mostly as afternoon downpours.

Kunming at a Glance

Kunming serves as the gateway to Yunnan’s diverse landscapes: from the UNESCO-listed Stone Forest 78km east of the city to the Tibetan foothills near Shangri-La. The city itself offers Dian Lake (the largest lake in Yunnan), the Western Hills with their cliff-side Taoist grottoes, Green Lake Park in the city centre, and the 1,200-year-old Yuantong Buddhist Temple. Kunming’s elevation means UV radiation is stronger than at sea level: sunscreen is recommended year-round. The city’s Kunming Changshui International Airport (KMG) is the 7th busiest in China, with direct flights to most Asian capitals and major Chinese cities. High-speed trains connect Kunming to Chengdu (5.5 hours), Guilin (7 hours), and Guangzhou (8 hours).

Kunming Seasonal Snapshot

  • Spring (March to May): The best season. Daytime temperatures 12 to 26C (54 to 79F), minimal rain in March and April, increasing in May. Cherry blossoms in Green Lake Park, flower expo in April. Hotel prices are moderate.
  • Summer (June to September): The wet season. 180 to 204mm of rain per month (June to August), but temperatures stay mild at 16 to 24C (61 to 75F). Rain comes as afternoon downpours, mornings often clear. Low hotel prices. Yi Torch Festival in late July or early August.
  • Autumn (October to November): Tied with spring for best season. Dry, clear, 7 to 21C (45 to 70F). Avoid October 1 to 7 (National Day Golden Week: crowds, 2 to 3x hotel prices). November is quiet and ideal.
  • Winter (December to February): Cool and dry. Daytime highs 15 to 17C (59 to 63F), nighttime lows 3 to 5C (37 to 41F). Minimal rain (16 to 18mm per month). Black-headed gulls winter on Green Lake. Lowest hotel rates except during Chinese New Year.
