Otaru is a port city of about 115,000 people on Hokkaido’s Japan Sea coast, 33 km northwest of Sapporo. It grew rich shipping coal and herring during the Meiji era, and its 1923 canal and stone warehouses now draw millions of visitors a year for glass-blowing, music boxes, fresh sushi and one of Japan’s heaviest snowfalls. Use the guides below to plan your trip around the city’s cool summers, snowy winters and compact, walkable centre.
Welcome to Otaru
Otaru’s fortune came from its port. By the 1890s it was Hokkaido’s financial gateway, a role that left it with stone banks, brick warehouses and a stretch of canal finished in 1923 to move goods from ships to barges. The canal fell into disuse after the war, but a 1980s preservation campaign turned the warehouses into restaurants and shops and made the waterway the city’s centrepiece. Today the centre is small enough to cross on foot, with the canal, Sakaimachi shopping street and JR Otaru Station within 15 minutes of each other.
