Location and Context

Toledo is the capital of the Castilla-La Mancha autonomous community in central Spain, 70 km (43 miles) south of Madrid. It sits at 529 metres (1,736 feet) above sea level on a hill surrounded on three sides by the Tagus River (Rio Tajo), which over millennia carved a natural moat around the granite outcrop.
