Burgos is the historic capital of its province in Castile and León, northern Spain, and one of the most important stops on the Camino de Santiago. Sitting 856 metres above sea level on the Castilian plateau, the city has a cool continental climate with cold, sometimes snowy winters, warm and dry summers, and around 550 to 600 mm of rain a year. This guide covers Burgos weather by month, the best time to visit, the main sights and events, and where to stay, with specific prices, hours and hotel links throughout.

Welcome to Burgos

Most people start a first visit at the Gothic cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984 and the burial place of El Cid, then work outward through the old town’s arcaded plazas, tapas bars and riverside promenades. The city is compact enough to cover on foot in a day or two, which makes it an easy add-on to the Camino de Santiago or a road trip between Madrid and Bilbao. For the full list of what to see, with opening hours and ticket prices, see the things to do in Burgos guide.

Weather at a Glance in Burgos

Burgos has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate (Köppen Csb) that behaves like a continental one because of the altitude. July and August are the warmest months, with average highs of 28°C (82°F) and lows of 13°C (55°F), and just 21 to 22 mm of rain each. January is the coldest, averaging highs of 7°C (45°F) and overnight lows around -1°C (30°F). Frost occurs on 60 to 70 nights a year, and light snow falls in most winters.

Rainfall is moderate, roughly 550 to 600 mm a year, but it is unevenly spread. April and May are the wettest months at about 52 to 58 mm, while July and August are the driest. The city gets around 2,400 hours of sunshine a year, peaking at about 320 hours in July and bottoming out near 80 hours in December. For the exact month by month numbers, use the Burgos weather by month guide.

Location and Climate Context

Burgos stands on the northern Castilian plateau, about 240 km north of Madrid and 160 km southwest of Bilbao, on the main A-1 motorway and the Madrid to Bilbao railway. Its inland position and 856-metre elevation, one of the highest of any Spanish provincial capital, are what give it the big day-to-night temperature swings and cold winters that distinguish it from the coastal cities of northern Spain. The Arlanzón river runs through the city and moderates the centre only slightly.
