Marbella sits on Spain’s Costa del Sol between Malaga and Gibraltar, sheltered by the Sierra Blanca mountains in a microclimate that delivers over 320 sunny days annually. Once a quiet fishing village, it transformed in the 1950s into Europe’s original luxury resort destination when Prince Alfonso von Hohenlohe opened the Marbella Club Hotel, drawing Hollywood royalty and European aristocracy. Today the city balances this glamorous legacy with an authentic Andalusian Old Town of cobblestone alleys, orange-tree plazas, and family-run tapas bars. The 27km coastline offers everything from protected dune beaches at Cabopino to the superyacht marina at Puerto Banus, with a hinterland of championship golf courses and the 1,215m La Concha mountain rising behind it all.

Marbella Weather at a Glance

Marbella has a subtropical Mediterranean climate influenced by its sheltered position between the Sierra Blanca and the Mediterranean. Summers are hot and bone-dry: July and August average 31-32°C (88-90°F) with barely 2-5mm of rain across the entire two months, and sea temperatures peak at 24°C (75°F) in August. Winters are mild, with January daytime temperatures averaging 16°C (61°F) and lows rarely dipping below 8°C (46°F). The wettest months are November and December (91-93mm each), but even these average only 8-9 rainy days, leaving plenty of dry spells. Annual rainfall totals about 610mm, roughly half of London’s and a third of Miami’s. Check our Marbella weather by month guide for the complete climate data.

Where is Marbella?

Marbella occupies a 27km stretch of Spain’s Costa del Sol in the province of Malaga, Andalusia, between the Mediterranean Sea and the Sierra Blanca mountains. It’s 52km southwest of Malaga city and 75km northeast of Gibraltar. The city proper has about 147,000 residents, swelling to over 400,000 in summer with tourists and seasonal residents. The A-7 coastal motorway runs through it, and Malaga Airport (AGP) serves as the main international gateway. Marbella’s sheltered position at the foot of the Sierra Blanca creates a microclimate that’s consistently 1-2°C warmer than Malaga in winter and slightly cooler in peak summer, with the mountains blocking cold northern winds.
