Matera sits on a limestone ridge in Basilicata, the instep of Italy’s boot, where people have lived in caves for over 9,000 years, making it one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements on Earth. The Sassi districts (a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1993) are a labyrinth of cave dwellings, rock churches, and stone alleyways that cascade down the western edge of the Gravina River gorge. The elevation of 401 meters gives Matera a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers (30°C/86°F in July) and mild, damp winters (10°C/50°F in January). The city receives about 500mm of rain annually, mostly between October and February. Once dismissed as Italy’s “national shame” for its poverty, Matera has reinvented itself as a cultural destination, European Capital of Culture in 2019 and a sought-after filming location for Hollywood productions.

Matera Weather at a Glance

The inland southern Italian location of Matera produces a hot-summer Mediterranean climate (Köppen Csa). July and August average 30°C (86°F) during the day, with heatwaves pushing temperatures to 38°C (100°F). January is the coldest month at 10°C (50°F) highs and 3°C (37°F) lows. The Sassi caves maintain a constant 15 to 23°C (59 to 73°F) year-round thanks to the thermal mass of limestone. They are warmer than outside in winter and cooler in summer. November is the wettest month at 65mm with 8 rainy days; July is driest at 15mm with only 2 rain days. The city gets about 2,500 hours of sunshine annually, with July delivering 11 hours of sun per day and December dropping to 4 hours. For a complete breakdown, see our Matera weather by month guide with the full temperature and rainfall table.
