Gubbio is a hill town of about 32,000 people in north-eastern Umbria, sitting at 522 metres on Monte Ingino. Average temperatures run from 2.7°C in January to 21.6°C in July, with 919mm of rain a year. The town hosts the Festa dei Ceri every May 15 and the world’s largest Christmas tree each December.

Welcome to Gubbio

Built in grey stone up a steep hillside, Gubbio is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in central Italy. Its centrepiece is Piazza Grande, a 14th-century suspended square lined by the Palazzo dei Consoli, and below it a Roman theatre still stages summer concerts. You can cross the whole old town on foot in a day and ride a cable car to the Basilica di Sant’Ubaldo on Monte Ingino for a view over the Apennines.

Gubbio Weather at a Glance

At 522 metres, Gubbio runs cooler than Perugia or Assisi. Winters are cold and damp, with January averaging 2.7°C and overnight lows just below freezing, while snow is common on Monte Ingino. Summers are warm rather than hot, with July and August highs around 27°C and the year’s lowest rainfall. November is the wettest month at 112mm, and the sunniest stretch runs June to August at 11 to 12 hours a day.
