Ravenna is famous for one thing above all else: its jaw-dropping Byzantine mosaics. Eight of the city monuments are UNESCO World Heritage sites, all dating from the 5th and 6th centuries AD, when Ravenna was the capital of the Western Roman Empire, the Ostrogothic Kingdom, and the Byzantine Exarchate of Italy. The mosaics inside the Basilica of San Vitale and the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia are among the finest surviving examples of early Christian art anywhere in the world. But Ravenna is not just a museum piece. It has a lively historic centre, 35km of sandy Adriatic beaches, and the hearty cuisine of Romagna: piadina flatbreads, cappelletti in broth, and grilled Adriatic seafood.

Welcome to Ravenna

Ravenna sits on the Adriatic coastal plain of Emilia-Romagna, about 8km inland from the sea. The city has roughly 160,000 residents and the historic centre is flat, compact, and almost entirely pedestrianised. You can walk between all five city-centre UNESCO sites in under 10 minutes. The climate is humid subtropical, with hot summers averaging 29 degrees C (84 degrees F) and cool winters around 6 degrees C (43 degrees F). The best months for sightseeing are May, June, and September. July and August are hot and busy with beach tourism; November through February are cold, grey, and quiet, but hotel prices drop by 40 to 50 percent.
