Siena is one of Italy’s most captivating medieval cities, a place where Gothic brick architecture, the thunder of the Palio horse race, and the deep pride of its 17 contrade neighbourhoods have shaped daily life for 800 years. Set on three hills in the heart of Tuscany, 70km south of Florence, the city’s UNESCO-listed historic centre is a labyrinth of narrow stone alleys that all lead, eventually, to the magnificent shell-shaped Piazza del Campo. Siena’s climate is Mediterranean with continental touches , hot, dry summers with temperatures reaching 31°C (88°F) in July, and cool winters averaging 2°C to 10°C (36°F to 50°F). The wettest months are October (110mm) and November (100mm). Whether you are visiting for the Palio, exploring the Duomo and its famous mosaic floor, or using Siena as a base to explore Chianti wine country, this guide covers everything you need to plan your trip.

Siena Weather & Climate at a Glance

July is the driest and hottest month (31°C / 88°F average high, 30mm rain), while January is the coldest (10°C / 50°F high, 2°C / 36°F low). Snow is rare , the city sees at most one or two light dustings per winter. The best weather for sightseeing runs from late April through mid-June and September through mid-October, with daytime highs of 17-27°C (63-81°F) and 7-10 hours of daily sun.
