La Paz, the capital of Baja California Sur, sits on the sheltered Gulf of California and holds a hot desert climate with 170mm (6.7in) of rain a year, daytime highs from 24.5C (76F) in January to 36.7C (98F) in July, and sea water warm enough to swim in every month. It is the base for swimming with whale sharks from October to April, the UNESCO-listed Isla Espiritu Santo and Balandra Beach, often ranked among the most beautiful beaches in Mexico.
Welcome to La Paz
Most visitors use La Paz as a launch point for the water: whale shark tours, sea lion snorkeling at Los Islotes and day trips to Balandra all leave from the city’s marina and beaches. But the Malecon promenade, the 19th-century cathedral and the seafood restaurants along the bay make the city itself worth two to three days before you head out. The walkable center keeps most hotels, restaurants and tour offices within a 2km radius, and the whole area is outlined in our La Paz neighborhoods guide.
La Paz Weather at a Glance
La Paz has a hot desert climate (Köppen BWh) with long, dry, sunny periods and only about 18 rainy days a year. Winter is mild and dry, with January highs of 24.5C (76F) and lows of 12.2C (54F), while summer turns hot and humid, peaking at 36.7C (98F) in July. Almost all the rain falls between July and October, with September the wettest month at 60mm (2.4in).
Sea temperatures run from 20.5C (69F) in February to 29C (84F) in September, and sunshine averages 7 to 11 hours a day depending on the month. The warm, calm water and low rainfall are the reason the bay supports whale sharks, sea lions and one of the healthiest marine ecosystems in the Gulf of California. For the complete month-by-month table, see our La Paz weather by month guide.

Where La Paz Sits and What Shapes Its Climate
La Paz lies on the southeastern side of the Baja California peninsula, opening onto the Gulf of California (Sea of Cortez) with the Pacific Ocean on the far side of the peninsula. This position gives it a hotter, drier climate than Cabo San Lucas to the south and less rainfall than the mainland coast. The surrounding Sierra de la Laguna mountains block much Pacific moisture, and the gulf’s warm water keeps winters mild while adding humidity and the occasional tropical storm in summer and fall.
The same geography creates the conditions for marine life. The gulf’s nutrient-rich water supports whale sharks, sea lions, dolphins and seasonal grey whales, which is why La Paz is known less as a beach resort and more as an ecotourism and water-sports base. Day-trip distances are short: Balandra is 25km north, Todos Santos is about an hour south, and La Ventana is 45 minutes southeast.
