Ensenada, Baja California, sits on the Pacific coast about 110 km (70 miles) south of the US border, with a dry, mild climate, a busy cruise port and Mexico’s top wine region 30 km inland. July through October brings the warmest, driest weather, and December through April brings gray whales into the bay. This guide covers the climate, the best months to visit and everything to do, with links to all seven in-depth Ensenada guides below.

Welcome to Ensenada

Ensenada is a working Pacific port of about 280,000 people, with more than 520,000 in the wider municipality, and it has been a getaway for Californians and cruise ships for over a century. The city hugs the shoreline of Bahía de Todos Santos, sheltered by the Punta Banda peninsula, which keeps the water calmer and the climate cooler than inland Baja. The Pacific, not altitude, drives the weather: cool ocean currents hold summers around 26°C (79°F) and winters near 20°C (68°F), while a marine layer brings morning fog in May and June.

Ensenada Weather at a Glance

Ensenada averages 17.2°C (63°F) year-round and gets about 260 mm (10.2 inches) of rain, almost all from November through March. August is the warmest month, with highs of 26.3°C (79°F) and lows of 17.7°C (64°F). January is the coolest, with highs of 19.7°C (67°F) and lows of 7.5°C (46°F). The sea ranges from 15.5°C (60°F) in winter to 21°C (70°F) in September.

Rainfall peaks at 50 mm in January, February and March, then drops to effectively zero from June through August. The driest, sunniest stretch runs June through September, which is why summer and early autumn are the busiest months for the beaches.
