Few cities on earth have weather as stable as San Diego’s: daytime highs stay between 18°C and 25°C nearly every month, the sun shines about 260 days a year, and annual rainfall totals just 262 mm (10.3 in). This San Diego guide ties the city’s climate to its seasons, neighborhoods, and hotels, and links to seven in-depth articles covering everything from monthly averages to where to stay.

San Diego Weather at a Glance

San Diego has a Mediterranean climate (Köppen Csb) shaped by the cold California Current, which runs south along the coast and keeps the air cool and the ocean chilly even in August. The result is a city where summer days at the beach rarely exceed 25°C (77°F), while inland neighborhoods 15 to 20 km east regularly hit 30°C (86°F) or more. The same ocean current is why the sea stays at 15 to 21°C (59 to 70°F) all year, cool enough that most swimmers use a wetsuit outside July through September.

Two local weather features define the calendar. The marine layer, called ‘May Gray’ in May and ‘June Gloom’ in June, is a low overcast that sits over the coast most mornings and burns off by early afternoon. The Santa Ana winds, most common from September through November, are hot, dry offshore gusts that can push coastal temperatures into the 30s°C (90s°F) and raise wildfire risk. Rain is a winter event: nearly all of the year’s 262 mm falls between November and March.

San Diego Seasons at a Glance

  • Winter (December to February): highs 18 to 19°C (66°F), lows 9 to 10°C (49 to 50°F), and the bulk of the year’s rain at 41 to 57 mm per month
  • Spring (March to May): highs climb from 19°C to 21°C (67 to 70°F) and rain tapers off, but the May Gray marine layer brings gray mornings to the coast
  • Summer (June to August): highs 22 to 25°C (72 to 77°F), nearly zero rain, with June Gloom mornings giving way to clear July and August afternoons
  • Fall (September to November): highs 21 to 25°C (70 to 77°F), the warmest ocean water, and the occasional Santa Ana wind event

San Diego Location and What Shapes Its Climate

San Diego sits at 32°N on the Pacific coast of Southern California, about 20 km north of the Mexican border at Tijuana. Its climate is set by three forces: the cold California Current offshore, which moderates temperatures; the coastal mountain ranges, which trap marine air along the coast while inland valleys heat up; and the subtropical high-pressure system that keeps summers dry. The city is far enough south that it never freezes at the coast, yet the ocean keeps it from ever getting genuinely hot.

This is why San Diego’s microclimates are so sharp. On a July afternoon, the coast can sit at 22°C (72°F) under a partial marine layer while El Cajon, 25 km inland, hits 33°C (91°F). The same pattern plays out in reverse in winter, when inland valleys cool faster than the coast at night. When you choose a base, the distance to the ocean matters more than the calendar month.

Where to Stay in San Diego

La Jolla is the upscale coastal pick with cliffside hotels and the sea lions at La Jolla Cove. Mission Bay and the beach communities are the family resort zone near SeaWorld and calm water.
