New York City’s event calendar is as dense and varied as the city itself. From the Thanksgiving Day Parade to summer concerts in Central Park, the city always has something happening. This guide covers the best New York City events by season.
Spring Events
Cherry Blossom Festival (April)
The Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s cherry blossom festival (Sakura Matsuri) celebrates the blooming of over 200 cherry trees. The main weekend festival features Japanese cultural performances and food. Peak bloom typically falls in mid to late April. The garden charges admission (18 USD); advance tickets recommended for the festival weekend.
Tribeca Film Festival (June)
Founded by Robert De Niro after 9/11 to revitalize Lower Manhattan, Tribeca has grown into a major film festival. Screenings, talks, and virtual reality experiences span venues across the city. Tickets range from 20 to 40 USD per screening; festival passes are available. Book early for high-profile premieres.
Autumn Events
Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade (November)
The parade runs from the Upper West Side to Herald Square on Thanksgiving morning (fourth Thursday in November). Giant balloons, marching bands, and floats draw millions of spectators. Arrive by 6 AM for a curbside spot along Central Park West, or watch the balloon inflation on the Upper West Side the evening before (a local’s tip). The parade is free to watch. Hotel prices spike for the Thanksgiving weekend.
Winter Events
Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree (December to Early January)
The tree lighting ceremony in early December kicks off the holiday season, but the tree remains lit through early January. The area around Rockefeller Center is extremely crowded throughout December, particularly on weekends. Visit early morning or late at night for smaller crowds. The surrounding holiday window displays on Fifth Avenue are free to view and magical.
