Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital since 1437, sits on the southern shore of the Firth of Forth with a population of 550,000. The city packs a medieval Old Town, a Georgian New Town (both UNESCO World Heritage), an extinct volcano you can climb (Arthur’s Seat), and the world’s largest annual arts festival into a compact, walkable footprint. It’s the UK’s second most-visited city after London, drawing 4 million tourists annually.

Welcome to Edinburgh: Scotland’s Capital of Castles and Festivals

Edinburgh operates on two speeds. From January through June, it’s a stately northern capital where you can walk the Royal Mile without jostling, get a table at a Michelin-starred restaurant same-day, and hear your own footsteps echo in centuries-old closes.

Then August arrives and the population doubles for the Festival Fringe, and every church hall, pub basement, and university lecture theatre becomes a performance venue. Both versions of Edinburgh are worth experiencing, but they require different planning strategies. The Castle, Arthur’s Seat, and the National Museum are constants; the cost of your hotel room and your ability to walk unimpeded down the Royal Mile are not.

Edinburgh Climate Overview: What to Expect Each Season

Edinburgh has a temperate maritime climate, cooler and drier than Scotland’s west coast. Summer highs average 19°C (66°F) in July and August, with overnight lows of 11°C (52°F). Winter highs reach just 7°C (45°F) in January, with lows of 1°C (34°F). Snow falls on about 12 days annually but rarely accumulates.

The city receives 633mm of rain per year spread across 127 rainy days, less than London or Glasgow. Wind is the variable that catches visitors off guard; a 15°C day can feel like 8°C when a North Sea easterly kicks up. October is the wettest month (66mm), April the driest (40mm). May brings the most sunshine at 188 hours. For complete month-by-month data, see our Edinburgh weather by month guide.

Edinburgh Seasonal Snapshot

Spring (March to May): Temperatures rise from 9°C to 15°C (48°F to 59°F). Cherry blossoms in the Meadows peak in late April. The Edinburgh Science Festival runs during the Easter holidays. This is statistically the driest season, and May is the sunniest month of the year.

Summer (June to August): Highs reach 19°C (66°F) with 17 hours of daylight around the solstice. August is the Festival month, when the city’s population doubles and hotel rates triple. Book 6+ months ahead for August accommodation. June offers similar weather without the crowds. Our Edinburgh events and festivals calendar lists every August event with dates and ticket prices.

Autumn (September to November): September holds summer warmth at 16°C (61°F); by November it’s 9°C (48°F). Autumn foliage in Princes Street Gardens peaks in mid-October. The Christmas markets begin in the third week of November. October is the wettest month, but hotel prices drop sharply after the festivals end.

Winter (December to February): Highs average 7°C (45°F), sunshine bottoms out at 46 hours in December, and daylight shrinks to 7 hours around the solstice. Hogmanay (New Year) brings a second tourist spike from December 30 to January 2. January and February offer the lowest hotel rates of the year, with 4-star rooms available for £90-120.
