Marrakech divides into two distinct zones: the walled medina (old city) and the modern ville nouvelle (new city) encompassing Gueliz and Hivernage. Each area has a fundamentally different character and price structure.
Marrakech Neighborhoods for Travelers
The Medina: The Walled Old City
The medina is a 600-hectare UNESCO World Heritage site enclosed by 19km of 12th-century walls. It contains Jemaa el-Fna, the souks, Bahia Palace, Medersa Ben Youssef, and most riads. The medina is a dense maze of 3,000+ narrow derbs (alleys) that GPS maps struggle with. Riad prices: 80-250 EUR ($87-$272) for a double, with the higher end giving you plunge pools and rooftop terraces.
The medina works best for travelers who want the atmospheric Marrakech experience within walking distance of the main sights. Downsides: noise (mopeds in alleys, call to prayer at 5 AM from 200+ mosques), aggressive touts in the souks
no car access, meaning your taxi drops you at the nearest gate (bab) and you walk 5-15 minutes through alleys to your riad. The best medina areas for accessibility are near Bab Laksour (west side near Koutoubia) and Mouassine (central, between the souks and Jemaa el-Fna). Avoid derbs deeper than a 5-minute walk from a main street if you dislike getting lost.
Gueliz: The Modern European Quarter
Gueliz is the French-built ville nouvelle with wide boulevards, sidewalk cafes, international restaurants, and the Majorelle Garden. It stretches along Avenue Mohammed V and Rue de la Liberte. Hotel prices: 60-150 EUR ($65-$163) for modern 3-4 star hotels.
Gueliz suits travelers who want a break from the medina’s intensity: you can walk to a restaurant without running a gauntlet of touts, buy groceries at a supermarket, and access your hotel by taxi right to the door. It is a 20-30 minute walk or a 5-10 minute taxi ride (30-50 MAD) to Jemaa el-Fna. The best area is near Place du 16 Novembre for cafes and shopping. Gueliz is also where you find bars serving alcohol, unlike most of the medina.
Hivernage: The Luxury District
Hivernage, west of Gueliz, is Marrakech’s luxury hotel zone with wide palm-lined avenues. It contains the Sofitel, Four Seasons, and the M Avenue complex of upscale restaurants and shops. Hotel prices: 150-500 EUR ($163-$544). Hivernage suits travelers who want resort-style accommodation with pools, spas, and fine dining. It is the least Moroccan-feeling part of the city. Taxi to Jemaa el-Fna: 10 minutes, 30-50 MAD. The Marrakech Menara Airport is 10 minutes by taxi (50-80 MAD).
The Palmeraie: Desert Palm Grove
The Palmeraie is a 13,000-hectare palm grove on the northern edge of the city, dotted with luxury resort hotels and private villas. Properties like the Mandarin Oriental, Barcelo Palmeraie, and Les Deux Tours are here. Hotel prices: 200-600 EUR ($218-$653). The Palmeraie is a destination in itself: you come here for the resort experience, not to explore Marrakech.
Taxi to the medina takes 20-30 minutes and costs 80-120 MAD each way. Camel rides and quad biking tours operate in the Palmeraie. The where to stay in Marrakech guide lists specific properties in each area.
