Fez is Morocco’s oldest imperial city, founded in 789 AD, and the cultural and spiritual heart of the country. Its UNESCO-listed medina, Fes el Bali, is the world’s largest car-free urban area with 9,400 streets dating back to the 9th century. Fez is not a beach destination or a resort town; it’s a city of medieval madrasas, leather tanneries, artisan workshops, and the world’s oldest continuously operating university. The climate is Mediterranean with continental influences: hot, dry summers from June to September and cool, wet winters from November to February. This guide covers everything you need to plan your visit, from weather and the best time to travel to where to stay, what to do, and how to get around.

Welcome to Fez

Fez isn’t a city you see; it’s a city you experience. The medina of Fes el Bali is a dense labyrinth of 9,400 alleys where donkeys carry goods past workshops unchanged for centuries, the smell of cedar wood and curing leather mixes with fresh bread, and every turn reveals either a masterpiece of Marinid architecture or a dead end. Unlike Marrakech, which has embraced mass tourism with open arms, Fez remains stubbornly authentic. You’ll get lost repeatedly, and that’s the point. The city rewards patience and curiosity with moments of genuine discovery: a courtyard garden hidden behind an unmarked door, a craftsman shaping brass by hand in a workshop the size of a wardrobe, the call to prayer echoing from a dozen minarets at once. Fez is Morocco’s intellectual capital, home to the University of Al Quaraouiyine (founded 859 AD), and it wears its history with quiet pride rather than polished presentation.

Weather at a Glance

Fez sits at 579 metres (1,900 feet) above sea level in northern Morocco’s interior. This gives it a Mediterranean climate with sharper seasonal swings than coastal cities like Casablanca or Tangier. Summers are hot and rainless: July and August average 35.1°C (95.2°F) during the day, with overnight lows around 18°C (64°F) and virtually zero rainfall. Winters are cool and wet: January daytime highs reach 16.0°C (60.8°F), overnight lows drop to 3.7°C (38.7°F), and rain falls on 7 days, totalling 60 mm. Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to October) are the Goldilocks seasons: warm days, cool nights, and manageable rain. Fez receives 488 mm (19.2 inches) of rain annually across 55 days and enjoys 3,087 hours of sunshine per year. Seasonal Snapshot

  • Spring (March to May): The best time to visit. Temperatures climb from 19.9°C (68°F) in March to 26.4°C (80°F) in May. Rain decreases, wildflowers bloom in the Middle Atlas foothills, and the countryside is green. Hotel prices are moderate, crowds manageable. Ideal for sightseeing and day trips to Volubilis and Meknes.
  • Summer (June to August): Hot and dry. June is still pleasant at 31.2°C (88°F) and hosts the Fes Festival of World Sacred Music. July and August are intense: 35.1°C (95°F) daily, with occasional spikes above 40°C (104°F). Sightseeing between noon and 4pm is draining. Hotel prices peak in August. Best for early risers who can sightsee before 11am and relax by a pool in the afternoon.
  • Autumn (September to November): The second-best window. September still feels like summer at 30.3°C (87°F) with little rain. October cools to 26.1°C (79°F) but rain picks up. November brings the first real chill and the highest monthly rainfall (66 mm). September and October are excellent for sightseeing with fewer crowds than spring.
  • Winter (December to February): Cool, wet, and quiet. Daytime highs of 16 to 17°C (61 to 63°F), overnight lows of 3.7 to 5.2°C (39 to 41°F). Rain falls on 6 to 7 days monthly. Many riads lack central heating. Hotel prices drop 30 to 50 percent. Best for budget travellers who don’t mind the cold and want the medina to themselves.

Where is Fez?

Fez is in northern Morocco, about 180 km (112 miles) east of Rabat and 320 km (199 miles) northeast of Marrakech. It sits in the Saiss plain between the Rif Mountains to the north and the Middle Atlas Mountains to the south, at an elevation of 579 metres. The city’s inland location, away from the moderating influence of the Atlantic Ocean, explains its sharp temperature swings between summer and winter. Fez is the capital of the Fes-Meknes administrative region and Morocco’s second-largest city, with a population of about 1.2 million. The fertile Saiss plain around the city produces olives, cereals, and vegetables, and the Middle Atlas foothills are known for cedar forests and Barbary macaques. Day trips from Fez include the Roman ruins of Volubilis (60 km west), the imperial city of Meknes (65 km west), the cedar forests of Ifrane (65 km south), and the pilgrimage town of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun.
