Isla Mujeres runs on a small calendar of festivals tied to the sea, fishing, and Mexican traditions. The two biggest are the Whale Shark Festival in July and the Fiesta de la Virgen del Carmen, also in July, honoring the fishermen’s patron saint. Here’s the month by month rundown of Isla Mujeres events and festivals, and if you’re planning a trip around one, the Isla Mujeres travel tips guide has the logistics.
Isla Mujeres Events: Whale Shark Festival and July
Whale Shark Festival
Held the second week of July at the Plaza Municipal in Centro, the Whale Shark Festival celebrates the migration of the whale sharks that feed off the island each summer. Expect conservation talks, live music, kids’ activities, and food stalls, mostly free to attend. It doubles as the island’s biggest wildlife moment of the year, and whale shark tours sell out, so book in June. See the things to do in Isla Mujeres guide for tour details.
Fiesta de la Virgen del Carmen
On July 16, the island celebrates the Virgen del Carmen, patron saint of fishermen. Local fishing boats decorated with flags and flowers carry the statue of the Virgin on a procession from the church through the bay, followed by fireworks and street food in Centro. It’s a free, family event that fills the waterfront by late afternoon.
Isla Mujeres Events: Winter and Spring
Carnaval
Carnaval on Isla Mujeres runs the week before Ash Wednesday, usually in February or March, when the weather is dry and sunny, as our Isla Mujeres weather by month guide shows. Parades with floats and costumes roll down Avenida Rueda Medina on several nights, and Centro fills with live music and food stands. Hotel prices rise for the week, so book early if you’re coming for it.
Semana Santa (Easter Week)
Semana Santa, the week leading up to Easter, is the busiest domestic holiday on the island. Mexican families arrive in force, Playa Norte fills from morning, and ferry queues from Cancun stretch long. Hotels and golf carts sell out weeks ahead. If you’re not here for the holiday itself, avoid the week before and after Easter.
Spring Fishing Tournaments
May brings several sport fishing tournaments based out of the island’s marinas, targeting sailfish, dorado, and tuna. Dates shift year to year, so check with the local marina or the tourism office. Charter boats run about MXN 8,000 to 12,000 for a half day, typically shared by 4 to 6 anglers.
Isla Mujeres Events: Fall and Day of the Dead
Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead)
On November 1 and 2, Isla Mujeres observes Day of the Dead with altars in the plaza and homes, plus candlelit visits to the island cemetery in La Gloria. It’s quieter and more local than the mainland celebrations, which is part of the appeal. Many restaurants serve pan de muerto and hot chocolate through the week.
New Year’s Eve
New Year’s Eve on Isla Mujeres centers on Playa Norte, where beach clubs and hotels host dinners and parties and fireworks launch over the water at midnight. Restaurants on Avenida Hidalgo take reservations weeks ahead. If you’re deciding when to visit, our best time to visit Isla Mujeres guide flags this as the priciest stretch of the year, and the where to stay in Isla Mujeres guide lists hotels that book out first.
