San Miguel de Allende is a UNESCO World Heritage city in the central Mexican highlands of Guanajuato, sitting at 1,900 meters (6,230 feet) above sea level. Its subtropical highland climate brings warm, sunny days and cool nights all year, with daytime highs from 22°C (72°F) in January to 30°C (86°F) in May and about 600mm (24 inches) of rain concentrated between June and September. Below you will find the weather by month, the best time to visit, things to do, the top neighborhoods, hotels, and practical travel tips, all in one place.
Welcome to San Miguel de Allende
The first thing you notice in San Miguel de Allende is the light: at this altitude the sun is strong and the sky stays a deep blue through most of the dry season. The town itself is a grid of cobblestone streets and pastel colonial facades radiating out from El Jardin, the main square, and the pink spires of the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcangel. Because the elevation keeps evenings cool even in summer, the city has a long outdoor season, with rooftop bars and courtyard restaurants open almost every night of the year.
Rain shapes the rhythm of the year more than temperature does. From November to April the days are dry and clear; from June to September the afternoons build clouds and dump short, heavy showers, usually between 4pm and 7pm. Locals schedule errands for the morning and take the rain as a cue to slow down. Knowing that rhythm is the key to planning a comfortable visit, and the guides below break it down month by month.
San Miguel de Allende Weather at a Glance
San Miguel de Allende averages 17°C (63°F) across the year, but the spread between day and night is what you will feel. January, the coolest month, averages a high of 22°C (72°F) and a low of 6°C (43°F). May, the warmest, reaches 30°C (86°F) by day while nights still cool to around 14°C (57°F). Because the air is thin and dry at 1,900 meters, temperatures drop quickly after sunset, so a jacket is useful in every month.
Rainfall totals about 600mm (24 inches) a year, less than half of what Mexico City receives. July is the wettest month at roughly 120mm, followed closely by August and September, while December through March each see under 15mm. Sunshine runs 8 to 9 hours a day in the dry season and 6 to 7 in the rainy months. There is no coastal humidity here, so the heat stays comfortable until the summer rains push humidity above 70%.

Where San Miguel de Allende Is and What Shapes Its Climate
San Miguel de Allende sits in the state of Guanajuato, about 270km (170 miles) northwest of Mexico City and 90km (56 miles) from both Queretaro and Leon. Its position on the central Mexican plateau, at 1,900 meters, is what keeps it mild while coastal Mexico bakes. The town lies in the rain shadow of the Sierra Gorda, which is why it gets far less rain than the Gulf coast, and most of what falls arrives with the summer monsoon, when moist air flows in from the Pacific and the Gulf of Mexico. The nearby state capital, Guanajuato, shares the same highland climate but sits 2,000 meters up and runs a degree or two cooler; you can compare the two cities here: Guanajuato city guide.
