Asti sits in the Tanaro River valley of Piedmont, 55 kilometres southeast of Turin, in a landscape of rolling vine-covered hills that produces two of Italy’s most famous wines: Asti Spumante and Barbera d’Asti. The city of 76,000 combines a remarkably intact medieval centre (more than a dozen 12th-13th century tower houses still stand) with one of Italy’s oldest traditions, the Palio di Asti horse race, first run in 1275. The surrounding Monferrato hills earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 2014 for their centuries-old vineyard landscape. For travellers, Asti offers Piedmontese food and wine culture at prices well below the better-known Langhe towns 30 kilometres south, with easy train access to Turin, Genoa, and Milan.

Welcome to Asti

Asti rewards travellers who come for more than just a day trip from Turin. The city’s medieval core, anchored by Piazza San Secondo and the towering brick Collegiata, reveals itself slowly: morning fog burning off the Tanaro valley, the Wednesday market filling Piazza Alfieri, an afternoon Barbera at a wine bar on Via Cavour. September transforms the city with two major events: the Festival delle Sagre food festival (second weekend) and the Palio di Asti horse race (third Sunday). Outside festival season, Asti is a quiet, working Piedmontese city where you will hear more dialect than English and pay 4 euros for a glass of excellent local Barbera.

Asti Weather at a Glance

Asti has a humid subtropical climate with continental influence, meaning hot, sticky summers and cold, foggy winters. July is the hottest month, averaging 24°C (75°F) with highs reaching 29°C (84°F) and humidity hovering around 75-80%. January is the coldest, averaging 2°C (36°F) with overnight lows dipping below freezing. The valley location produces thick fog from November through February that can linger all day. Rainfall totals about 835mm annually, peaking in May (95mm) and October (100mm). July is the driest month at 45mm. Snow falls most winters but rarely accumulates more than a few centimetres in the city.
