Sorrento’s event calendar is weighted toward summer, with religious processions at Easter and Christmas framing the year. The town’s long history as a Grand Tour stop means it hosts classical music events that punch above its size. Here are the specific events, dates, and what to expect. For an overview, see the Sorrento travel guide.
Spring Events in Sorrento
Easter Week Processions (Settimana Santa)
Easter week (late March or April, dates follow the Catholic calendar) brings Sorrento’s most dramatic religious events. On Holy Thursday, the town’s confraternities carry the “Visit to the Sepulchres” through churches decorated with flowers and sprouted wheat. The main event is Good Friday’s Processione dei Misteri: hooded penitents in white robes carry a statue of the Dead Christ through the darkened streets of the old town, accompanied by a choir singing the Miserere. The procession starts around 8 PM from the Church of Santa Maria del Carmine and winds through the centro storico for about 3 hours. On Holy Saturday midnight, the Easter Vigil includes the traditional scioglimento del velo (unveiling of the Madonna statue). Book accommodation 3-4 months ahead for Easter weekend.
Sorrento in Fiore (Sorrento in Bloom)
Held in late April or early May (dates announced in March), this flower festival transforms Via San Cesareo and the old town alleys into a garden exhibition. Local florists create elaborate floral installations, and balconies are draped with arrangements. The event includes free flower-arranging workshops and a competition for the best-decorated street corner. It’s a colorful but low-key affair, not a major draw like Infiorata elsewhere in Italy, but it makes spring walks through the historic center extra photogenic.
Summer Events in Sorrento
Sorrento Summer Music Festival (Estate Musicale Sorrentina)
Running from mid-June through late August, this classical music festival holds concerts in the Cloister of San Francesco (Chiostro di San Francesco). The program includes chamber music, opera excerpts, and solo piano recitals. Performances start at 8:30 PM or 9 PM, taking advantage of the cloister’s natural acoustics and the cooling evening air. Tickets cost β¬15-30 depending on the performer; buy at the Cloister box office from 7 PM on concert nights or at the tourist office on Via Luigi De Maio. The 2025 program is published in May on the Sorrento Foundation website. Arrive 20 minutes early for good seats.
Ferragosto (August 15)
Ferragosto is Italy’s national summer holiday, and Sorrento celebrates with a fireworks display over the Bay of Naples at midnight on August 15. The best viewing spots are Villa Comunale, the terrace at Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria (guests only), and the Punta del Capo viewpoint. The fireworks are synchronized to music and reflect off the water. Restaurants book out days in advance; make a reservation by August 10. Many shops close from 1 PM to 5 PM on the day itself. The Circumvesuviana train runs a reduced Sunday schedule.
Autumn Events in Sorrento
Sant’Agnello Lemon Festival (Festa del Limone)
The second weekend of September brings the lemon festival to Sant’Agnello, a 5-minute Circumvesuviana ride from Sorrento (or a 20-minute walk along Corso Italia). The festival celebrates the IGP Limone di Sorrento with lemon-themed food stalls, limoncello tastings (β¬3-5 per tasting flight), live music in Piazza Matteotti, and a parade of citrus-decorated floats on Sunday afternoon. Local pastry shops compete for the best delizia al limone (lemon cream-filled sponge cake, β¬4-6). The event is authentically local, not a tourist production. Free entry.
Grape and Olive Harvest Experiences
From late September through October, several agriturismi in the hills around Massa Lubrense and Sant’Agata sui Due Golfi offer grape harvest (vendemmia) experiences. You pick grapes in the morning, then join a lunch with the farm family featuring their own wine and olive oil. Prices run β¬40-60 per person including the meal. Book through the Sorrento Tourist Office or directly with farms like Il Casale di Giano (Via Nastro Verde) or Fattoria Terranova (Sant’Agata). Olive harvest (raccolta delle olive) runs in October and November; you can participate in the pressing at the frantoio (olive mill).
Winter Events in Sorrento
Christmas Season (Natale a Sorrento)
From early December through January 6 (Epiphany), Sorrento strings lights across Corso Italia and sets up a large nativity scene (presepe) in Piazza Tasso, typically unveiled on December 8 (Feast of the Immaculate Conception). The presepi exhibition at the Church of San Francesco displays dozens of handcrafted nativity scenes from local artisans. Christmas Eve (La Vigilia) is the main celebration: families gather for the Feast of Seven Fishes dinner; many restaurants offer a fixed-price Vigilia menu (β¬50-80 per person). Book by December 15. On January 6, the Befana (Christmas witch) distributes sweets to children in Piazza Tasso in the morning.
New Year’s Eve (Capodanno)
Sorrento’s New Year’s Eve centers on Piazza Tasso with live music starting around 10 PM and a midnight fireworks display over the bay. The town erects a stage in the square with a mix of cover bands and DJ sets. Many hotels offer gala dinners (cenone di Capodanno, typically β¬120-200 per person including drinks and entertainment). Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria and Bellevue Syrene are the two prime gala venues. Book by early December. On New Year’s Day, take the traditional passeggiata along Via del Capo to Punta del Capo to watch the first sunset of the year.
