Amalfi sits at the mouth of the Valle dei Mulini on Italy’s Tyrrhenian coast, 65 kilometers south of Naples. The town of 5,000 was once the capital of a maritime republic that rivaled Venice and Genoa, and its Arab-Norman Duomo still dominates the main square. Today Amalfi anchors the famous Costiera Amalfitana, a 50-kilometer stretch of cliffs, lemon terraces, and pastel villages that draws millions of visitors annually.

Welcome to Amalfi: What to Expect

Amalfi is compact and vertical. The main street, Via Lorenzo d’Amalfi, runs 300 meters from the Duomo to the waterfront. Everything else climbs uphill through staircases and narrow alleys. You’ll spend your days walking stairs or catching ferries to Positano (25 minutes), Capri (1 hour), and Salerno (35 minutes). The town makes an excellent base for exploring the coast: it’s central, well-connected by SITA bus 5070, and has the best ferry terminal between Sorrento and Salerno.

The local economy revolves around lemons (the large, aromatic sfusato variety), handmade paper (a craft dating to the 12th century), and tourism. In July and August the centro storico fills shoulder-to-shoulder with day-trippers from cruise ships and tour buses. Come in May or September and you’ll share the piazza with far fewer people while enjoying temperatures of 22-26 Celsius (72-79 Fahrenheit).

Amalfi Weather at a Glance

Amalfi has a classic Mediterranean climate: hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. July and August average 30 Celsius (86 Fahrenheit) highs with only 15-20mm of rain per month. The sea reaches 26 Celsius (79 Fahrenheit) in August, warm enough for comfortable swimming. Winters are cool and damp: January highs of 12 Celsius (54 Fahrenheit) with about 100mm of rain across 10-12 wet days. November is the wettest month at 160mm.

Annual sunshine totals about 2,500 hours, peaking at 11 hours per day in July and falling to 4 hours in December. The coastal location moderates temperature extremes: it rarely drops below freezing (the record low is -2 Celsius) and heatwaves above 35 Celsius (95 Fahrenheit) usually last only 2-3 days before sea breezes return. The Amalfi weather by month guide has complete monthly data including a climate table.

Location: Where Amalfi Sits and What Shapes Its Weather

Amalfi is wedged between the Lattari Mountains and the Tyrrhenian Sea on the southern side of the Sorrentine Peninsula. The mountains rise to 1,444 meters (Monte Sant’Angelo a Tre Pizzi) directly behind the town, creating a rain shadow that partially blocks weather systems from the north. The sea moderates temperatures year-round, keeping winters 3-5 Celsius warmer than inland Campania towns like Avellino. The narrow Valle dei Mulini funnels cool air down from the mountains in the evening, so even on hot August days, the temperature drops noticeably after sunset.

The SS163 coastal road, carved into cliffs in the 1850s, connects Amalfi to Positano (16 km west) and Salerno (25 km east). The road is famous for its hairpin turns and tunnel galleries. Amalfi’s ferry terminal is the second-busiest on the coast after Sorrento, with routes operated by Travelmar and NLG (Navigazione Libera del Golfo).
