Tangier Neighborhoods

Morocco › Tangier-Tétouan-Al Hoceïma › Tangier

Tangier divides into three main zones: the historic medina (old walled city), the ville nouvelle (French-built new town), and the beach and port areas. The city is compact enough that you can walk from the Kasbah on its hilltop to the beach in 30 minutes.

Tangier Neighborhoods for Travelers

The Medina: Tangier’s Walled Old City

The Medina occupies the hilltop and eastern slope of central Tangier, enclosed by 15th-century Portuguese walls. The Kasbah sits at the top, the Petit Socco square marks the center, and the Grand Socco at the bottom forms the boundary with the ville nouvelle. The medina’s main street, Rue Siaghine, runs downhill connecting the two squares. The area suits first-time visitors who want the classic Moroccan medina experience: narrow alleys, hidden riads, rooftop terraces, and the call to prayer from the Kasbah mosque. Average accommodation prices: 50-120 EUR per night in a riad. The medina has steps and steep alleys; pack light luggage you can carry yourself.

Ville Nouvelle: Tangier’s Modern Center

The ville nouvelle stretches south and west from the Grand Socco along Boulevard Pasteur and Avenue Mohammed V. This is Tangier’s French colonial quarter with wide boulevards, sidewalk cafes, patisseries, banks, and airline offices. The area suits travelers who prefer modern amenities, elevators, and a less intense version of Morocco. Average hotel prices: 60-140 EUR per night. Boulevard Pasteur is the main commercial street. The Terrasse des Paresseux (Terrace of the Lazy), a clifftop promenade at the western end of Boulevard Pasteur, offers the best views of the Strait of Gibraltar and the ferry port.

Malabata and the Beach Area

The Malabata district runs east along Tangier’s 7km beach toward the Cap Malabata lighthouse. This area holds Tangier’s luxury beachfront hotels including the Mövenpick and Hilton, plus the Corniche de Tanger, a seafront promenade with cafes, restaurants, and a marina. The beach is wide, sandy, and patrolled by lifeguards in summer (June through September). Hotel prices: 100-250 EUR per night. The area suits families and beach-focused travelers. It’s a 15-20 minute walk or a 5-minute petit taxi ride (10-15 MAD) from the ville nouvelle.
