Canton Tower
The Canton Tower, at 600 meters, is China’s second-tallest structure and Guangzhou‘s most recognizable landmark. Located in Haizhu District on the south bank of the Pearl River, it’s open daily 9:00 AM to 11:00 PM. The 433-meter indoor observation deck costs CNY 150. The 488-meter outdoor observation deck costs CNY 228. The Bubble Tram, a glass pod orbiting the roof at 455 meters, is CNY 130 extra. Take Metro line 3 to Canton Tower Station. Chen Clan Ancestral Hall
The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, built in 1894, is a masterpiece of Lingnan architecture in Liwan District. Its roofs, walls, and beams are covered in intricate carvings depicting Cantonese folklore. Open daily 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM. Entry CNY 10. Metro line 1 to Chen Clan Academy Station (Exit D). The on-site Guangdong Folk Art Museum displays embroidery, ceramics, and ivory carvings. Allow 1.5-2 hours.
Shamian Island
Shamian Island is a 0.3-square-kilometer sandbank, once the British and French concession from 1859 to 1946. Its tree-lined boulevards feature 150+ European colonial buildings. Free entry. The bronze statues along the main avenue depict life in old Guangzhou. Our Lady of Lourdes Chapel (1892) still holds services. Metro line 6 or 8 to Cultural Park Station. Yuexiu Park and Zhenhai Tower
Yuexiu Park is Guangzhou’s largest urban park at 860,000 square meters, home to the Five Rams Statue, the city’s symbol. The Zhenhai Tower (Guangzhou Museum), a five-story Ming Dynasty pagoda built in 1380, houses city history exhibits. Entry CNY 10. Open 9:00 AM-5:00 PM Tuesday-Sunday. Metro line 2 to Yuexiu Park Station. Free entry to the park. Mornings bring local tai chi practitioners.
Sacred Heart Cathedral
The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, completed in 1888, is one of only four fully granite Gothic cathedrals worldwide. Built by French missionaries in Yuexiu District, its twin spires reach 58 meters. Open Monday-Friday 8:30-11:30 AM and 2:30-5:30 PM, weekends 8:30 AM-5:30 PM. Free entry. Metro line 6 to Yide Lu Station. Dress respectfully.
Baiyun Mountain
Baiyun Mountain (White Cloud Mountain) is a scenic area of 30 peaks in northern Guangzhou, with the highest point Moxing Summit at 382 meters. The cable car (CNY 25 up, CNY 20 down) runs from Yuntai Garden to the Peak Plaza. The mountain has hiking trails, a bird park, and teahouses. Open daily 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM. Main gate entry CNY 5. Metro line 3 to Yuntai Garden area then a bus or taxi. Best visited on clear autumn and winter days for city panoramas.
