Salvador, the capital of Bahia and Brazil’s first colonial capital (1549-1763), sits on a peninsula at the entrance of the Bay of All Saints. The city’s Pelourinho historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage site of pastel-coloured 17th-century buildings and baroque churches, anchors one of the world’s strongest Afro-Brazilian cultures. Salvador gave the world capoeira, acaraje, and a Carnival that draws 2 million people to its streets. The Atlantic coastline stretches from the calm bay beach of Porto da Barra to the open-ocean sands of Stella Maris, 25km north. Use the guides below to plan your trip.

Welcome to Salvador: Brazil’s Afro-Brazilian Heart

Perched on an escarpment above the bay, Salvador divides into the Upper City (Cidade Alta, the colonial Pelourinho) and Lower City (Cidade Baixa, the port and commerce). The 72-metre Elevador Lacerda connects the two. The Pelourinho’s cobblestone streets hold the gold-leaf-covered Igreja de Sao Francisco, capoeira circles in Terreiro de Jesus square, and the weekly Terca da Bencao street celebration on Tuesdays. Along the coast, the Barra neighbourhood offers the city’s best urban beach at Porto da Barra, while Rio Vermelho’s Largo de Santana square hums with acaraje stalls and live music on weekend nights. The Salvador neighborhoods guide maps all five key districts.

Salvador Climate and Seasonal Snapshot

Salvador has a tropical monsoon climate with warm temperatures year-round. The temperature varies just 3°C between the coolest month (August, 27°C/81°F) and warmest (January-March, 30°C/86°F). What changes is rain: the wet season runs April through July, peaking in May at 303mm over 22 days. The dry season runs September through February with more manageable 97-122mm of monthly rain. Sea temperatures stay between 25-28°C (77-82°F) year-round. For complete monthly data, see Salvador weather by month.

The best time to visit Salvador is August through October or January for the best balance of sun and manageable rain. Carnival (February/March) is the biggest event but demands bookings 4-6 months ahead. April through June offers the lowest hotel rates but the most rain.
