East Fort and Chalai
The historic heart of the city, centred on the Padmanabhaswamy Temple and Kuthiramalika Palace. Narrow lanes lined with brassware and textile shops lead into Chalai Market, the city’s busiest bazaar for spices, silk and gold. This area is best for heritage travellers who want to walk between attractions, and it has the densest selection of budget and mid-range hotels, with rooms from about ₹1,500 a night. Palayam and the Secretariat
The government quarter north of the old city, home to the Napier Museum, zoo, Kanakakunnu Palace and the Kerala Secretariat building. Wide tree-lined avenues, parks and the city’s main museums make it a good base for families and first-time visitors. Thampanoor and the Railway Station
Thampanoor clusters around Trivandrum Central railway station and the KSRTC bus stand, making it the most convenient area for transit-heavy itineraries. Budget hotels, vegetarian restaurants including the Saravana Bhavan chain, and travel agents line the streets. Suits backpackers and rail travellers, with dorm beds from ₹500 and basic doubles from ₹1,200.

Kovalam
Sixteen km south of the centre, Kovalam’s Lighthouse, Hawa and Samudra beaches form the city’s tourism anchor. Cliff-top restaurants, ayurvedic massage centres and resorts line the seafront. This is the place for beach resort stays, from ₹3,000 mid-range properties to ₹25,000 luxury resorts like The Leela Kovalam. It’s a 30 to 45 minute taxi ride from the central station.
Veli and Shanghumukham
North of Kovalam near the airport, Veli Tourist Village offers backwater boating, a children’s park and sculpted gardens, while Shanghumukham Beach runs up to the Trivandrum airport apron. Quieter than Kovalam and closer to the airport, it suits short-stay travellers catching early flights. A handful of beachside cafés and budget guesthouses line the stretch.
Poovar
Thirty km south near the Tamil Nadu border, Poovar is an estuary of backwaters, mangroves and a sand-spit beach reached by boat. Floating cottages and quiet backwater resorts dominate, ideal for couples and anyone wanting to isolate from the city. Day visits by boat from the jetty are common, and staying costs from about ₹6,000 a night in floating properties.
