Calangute Travel Tips: Getting There

Which Airport Serves Calangute?

Goa has two airports. Dabolim (GOI), the older one, is about 45 km and a one-hour drive from Calangute; the newer Manohar International Airport at Mopa (GOX) is further north at roughly 55 km and about 70 to 90 minutes by road. Check which one your flight lands at, because pre-paid taxi fares differ and Mopa has fewer budget shuttle options. For more detail, see our things to do in Calangute guide. For more detail, see our Calangute events and festivals guide.

A pre-paid taxi from Dabolim to Calangute costs roughly 1,200 to 1,800 INR, and from Mopa about 2,000 to 2,800 INR. There is no direct train to Calangute; the nearest stations are Thivim (about 18 km) for Konkan Railway connections and Karmali near Panaji. For more detail, see our where to stay in Calangute guide. Calangute Travel Tips: Getting Around

Scooters are the default way to move around North Goa; rentals run 400 to 700 INR per day with a valid licence, and an international driving permit plus helmet is expected at checkpoints. Local buses connect Calangute junction to Mapusa and Panaji for 10 to 30 INR, but they stop running for the most part by 20:00. Taxis in Goa are unregulated and meter-free, so agree the full fare before you get in. For more on navigation see the Calangute neighborhoods guide.

Calangute Travel Tips: Money, Visa and Practicalities

India’s e-visa covers most nationalities for tourism stays of 30 days, and many first-time visitors use it; apply online at least four days before travel. ATMs line the main Calangute road but some run out over big holiday weekends, so carry a few thousand rupees in cash. Tipping is not customary in India but 5 to 10 percent at sit-down restaurants and 20 to 50 INR to porters is appreciated rather than expected.

Calangute Travel Tips: Safety and Health

Calangute is a busy tourist area where petty theft, particularly unattended phones and wallets on the beach, is the main risk, so do not leave valuables on your sunbed while swimming. Drink only sealed bottled water and avoid ice from street vendors; tap water is not safe to drink. The sea is calm from November to April but swim only between the lifeguard flags, and stay out entirely during monsoon surf.
