Urbino Events and Festivals

Italy Marche Urbino

Urbino’s event calendar revolves around Renaissance history, classical and jazz music, and the rhythms of university life. The big one is the Festa del Duca in August, when the whole city transforms into a 15th-century ducal court with costumes, parades, and feasts. There are smaller festivals throughout the year, from a kite festival in June to a contemporary music series in winter, that give you a reason to visit outside peak season. Here’s a month-by-month guide to Urbino’s events and festivals, with dates, locations, and what to expect.

Urbino Events and Festivals: Summer Highlights

Festa dell’Aquilone (Kite Festival)

Held during the first weekend of June, the Kite Festival takes over the grassy slopes below the Fortezza Albornoz. Hundreds of kites, from simple single-line models to elaborate 10-metre show kites, fill the sky above the ducal palace towers. It’s organised by the local Pro Loco and the University of Urbino’s education department. The event runs Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 to sunset. It’s free to watch, and children can make their own small kite at craft stations for 3 EUR. Food stands sell porchetta sandwiches (5 EUR) and local wine by the glass (3 EUR). The best viewing spot is from the Fortezza ramparts looking down at the field, though you need to arrive by 10:30 to claim a spot on the wall.

Urbino Jazz Festival

Running for 4 to 5 days in the last week of July, the Urbino Jazz Festival brings Italian and international jazz musicians to venues across the historic centre. Headline concerts are held in the Cortile d’Onore (the main courtyard) of the Palazzo Ducale, with smaller sets at Piazza della Repubblica, Teatro Sanzio, and various churches. Past performers have included Enrico Rava, Stefano Bollani, and the Yellowjackets. Tickets for courtyard concerts are 15 to 25 EUR depending on the artist; smaller venue shows are 10 to 15 EUR. The full programme is published in early June on the festival’s website. The courtyard concerts start at 21:30, bring a cushion, the stone steps are hard. Book tickets online at least two weeks ahead for courtyard shows, which sell out.

Festa del Duca (Duke’s Festival)

The Festa del Duca is Urbino’s signature annual event, held over three days around August 15 (the weekend closest to Ferragosto). The city transforms into a Renaissance court with historical reenactments, costumed parades, flag-throwing competitions (sbandieratori), falconry displays, archery tournaments, and an outdoor banquet in Piazza Rinascimento. The highlight is the ‘Corteo del Duca’ parade on the Saturday evening, hundreds of participants in 15th-century costumes march from the Palazzo Ducale through the city streets by torchlight. Sunday features the Palio del Duca, a horse race around a makeshift track on the outskirts of town. All events are free to watch. The banquet (cena rinascimentale) costs 30 EUR per person and serves dishes based on Renaissance recipes, book through the Pro Loco Urbino office (+39 0722 2638) by July 25 at the latest. Hotels fill up 2 to 3 months in advance.

Urbino Events and Festivals: Spring

Settimana della Cultura (Culture Week)

Italy’s national Culture Week typically falls in the last week of March (dates vary slightly each year, check the MiBACT website in February). During this week, all state museums including the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche inside Palazzo Ducale are free. Opening hours are extended until 22:00 on Friday and Saturday. The university organises free guided tours of the ducal palace, the Raphael house, and the historic university buildings. Tours are in Italian but the guides usually provide an English summary if asked. No booking required, just show up at the meeting point 10 minutes before the posted time.

Festa di Sant’Ubaldo (Feast of Saint Ubaldo)

On May 15, Urbino celebrates its patron saint with a solemn morning mass in the Duomo (Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta) at 10:30, followed by a procession carrying the saint’s relics through the streets of the centro storico. In the afternoon, Piazza della Repubblica hosts a small market selling local cheeses, cured meats, honey, and truffle products. It’s a local religious event rather than a tourist spectacle, authentic but low-key. Restaurants serve special menus featuring crescia and roast lamb; book at least a day ahead.

Urbino Events and Festivals: Autumn and Winter

Fiera Nazionale del Tartufo Bianco di Acqualagna

While not in Urbino itself, the National White Truffle Fair in Acqualagna (30 km south, about 35 minutes by car) is the region’s biggest food event and draws visitors from across Europe. It runs every weekend from late October through mid-November. The fair is open 10:00 to 19:00 Saturday and Sunday with free entry. You can buy fresh white truffles (Tuber magnatum Pico) directly from hunters, prices in 2025 ranged from 200 to 400 EUR per 100g depending on season quality. Restaurants in Urbino also run truffle menus during this period. The hourly bus from Urbino to Acqualagna (Adriabus, line 25) takes 50 minutes and costs 3 EUR each way, the last return bus leaves at 19:30.

Natale a Urbino (Christmas in Urbino)

From the first weekend of December until January 6 (Epiphany), Urbino’s Piazza Rinascimento and Piazza della Repubblica host Christmas markets with wooden stalls selling handmade crafts, vin brule (mulled wine, 3 EUR), roasted chestnuts, and local food products. A large Christmas tree is erected in the courtyard of the Palazzo Ducale, the scene with the twin torricini towers lit up at night is spectacular. On December 31, the city organises a free New Year’s Eve concert on Piazza Rinascimento starting at 22:30, with fireworks at midnight launched from the Fortezza Albornoz. Dress warmly, temperatures hover around 2 to 4 degrees C (36 to 39 degrees F) at night.

Urbino Plays Jazz (Winter Edition)

A smaller, winter counterpart to the summer jazz festival, Urbino Plays Jazz runs from late January through March with concerts every Friday and Saturday evening at the Teatro Sanzio (Via Giuseppe Garibaldi 36). Tickets are 10 EUR for a single evening or 40 EUR for a season pass. The programme mixes student ensembles from the university’s music department with professional Italian jazz quartets. Details are posted on the university’s events page in early January.
