Trento’s event calendar reflects its dual identity: a historic Italian city with deep Germanic and Alpine roots. From a world-class mountain film festival each spring to traditional Christmas markets that fill the medieval squares, there’s a cultural event nearly every month. Here are the major annual events with dates, locations, and what to expect.
Trento Events and Festivals: Spring (March to May)
Trento Film Festival (Late April to Early May)
Founded in 1952, the Trento Film Festival is the oldest international mountain film festival in the world. Over 10 days, the city screens documentaries and feature films about mountaineering, exploration, and Alpine culture. Screenings take place at the Teatro Sociale, the Sala della Cooperazione, and outdoor locations around the city. The festival also includes photography exhibitions, mountaineering literature awards, and the prestigious Genziana d’Oro (Golden Gentian) award. Most film screenings cost 5-8 euros with festival passes available for 40 euros. The city fills with climbers, filmmakers, and outdoor enthusiasts. Book accommodation 4-6 weeks ahead as hotels fill during the festival. Check our best time to visit Trento for weather conditions during the festival period.
Festa di Primavera (March/April, variable)
Held on the first Sunday after Easter, this spring festival fills Piazza Duomo with flower displays, local food stalls, and live folk music from Trentino’s valley communities. Free entry. The highlight is the traditional Palio dell’Oca (Goose Race), a medieval-inspired competition between the city’s historic districts along the riverbank. For dining recommendations during festival season, see our things to do in Trento food and wine section.
Trento Events and Festivals: Summer (June to August)
Feste Vigiliane (Last Week of June)
Trento’s biggest annual celebration honours San Vigilio, the city’s patron saint and third bishop. For three days (typically Thursday to Saturday of the last week of June), the entire historic centre becomes a festival ground. The programme includes: the Tombola Vigiliana (a massive city-wide bingo game on Friday evening), the Palio dell’Oca boat race on the Adige, open-air concerts in Piazza Duomo and Piazza Fiera featuring Italian and international acts, historical reenactments of the Council of Trent era, and a spectacular fireworks display over the river on Saturday night. Food stalls serve local specialities: polenta e funghi (4-6 euros), carne salada (cured beef, 8-10 euros a plate), and local wines by the glass (3-5 euros). Free entry to all events. Book hotels 6-8 weeks ahead for Feste Vigiliane weekend.
Aperitivo in Cortile (July-August, Thursdays)
Every Thursday evening in July and August, the courtyards of Trento’s Renaissance palazzi open for outdoor aperitivo sessions with live jazz and acoustic music. Participating venues include Palazzo Roccabruna, Palazzo Geremia, and the courtyard of Castello del Buonconsiglio. Drinks cost 5-8 euros with complimentary stuzzichini (snacks). The events run from 18:00 to 22:00. No tickets needed, just show up. See Trento neighborhoods guide for the best neighbourhoods to explore these historic courtyards.
Trento Events and Festivals: Autumn (September to November)
Festival dell’Economia di Trento (Late September/Early October)
The Trento Economics Festival is Italy’s premier economics gathering, attracting Nobel laureates, central bank governors, and leading academics for four days of public talks, panel discussions, and workshops. Events are held across the city: Teatro Sociale for keynote speeches, the university campus for academic sessions, and Piazza Duomo for open-air panel talks. Most events are free and open to the public with registration on the festival website. The 2025 festival theme focused on global trade and inequality. The 2026 dates will be announced in June. Our where to stay in Trento covers hotels near the main festival venues.
Trento DOC Festival (October)
A celebration of Trentino’s sparkling wine tradition, this two-weekend festival in October features tastings from over 30 producers in the courtyard of Palazzo Roccabruna. Entry is 15 euros and includes a tasting glass and five tasting tokens. Additional tokens cost 2 euros each. Masterclasses on metodo classico production techniques run throughout both weekends (25 euros, advance booking required). The festival coincides with the grape harvest in the surrounding Cembra Valley. See Trento weather by month for October weather to plan your visit.
Trento Events and Festivals: Winter (November to February)
Mercatino di Natale (Christmas Markets, November 20 to December 24)
Trento’s Christmas markets transform Piazza Duomo and Piazza Fiera into an Alpine winter village with 90 wooden stalls. Sellers offer handcrafted wooden toys from Val Gardena, local woollen textiles, Trentino cheeses and speck, and the essential vin brule (mulled wine, 3.50 euros). Piazza Duomo hosts the larger market with the nativity scene and the Christmas tree. Piazza Fiera focuses on food with stalls serving strangolapreti (spinach dumplings, 6-8 euros) and apple strudel. The markets run daily 10:00-19:30 (until 20:00 on Fridays and Saturdays). Entry is free. Weekends draw large crowds from Austria and Germany. Visit on weekday mornings for the calmest experience. The markets close at 13:00 on December 24. Our best time to visit Trento guide recommends booking accommodation 6-8 weeks ahead for December weekends. For getting to the markets, see Trento travel tips for transport details.
Carnevale di Trento (February, date varies)
Trento’s Carnival celebrations feature costumed parades through the historic centre on the Sunday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. The parade starts at Piazza Dante at 14:00 and winds through Via Belenzani to Piazza Duomo. Local school groups, folklore associations, and the Matoci (traditional masked characters from the Val di Fassa) participate. Street food stalls sell frittelle (carnival fritters filled with apple jam, 2 euros each) and chiacchiere (crispy fried pastry strips). Free entry. Our Trento neighborhoods guide guide covers the best streets for parade viewing. For winter weather considerations, check Trento weather by month for February conditions.
