Agrigento, on Sicily’s southern coast, has a classic Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The city sits on a hill 230 metres above sea level with the Valley of the Temples sloping down toward the sea. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 30°C (86°F), while winter highs hover around 14-15°C (57-59°F). Most of the annual 470mm of rain falls between October and February. The sirocco wind from North Africa can push temperatures above 40°C (104°F) in July and August, so plan outdoor sightseeing for early morning or late afternoon during those months. Winter in Agrigento is mild compared to northern Europe but damp. Daytime highs reach 14-15°C (57-59°F) and nights drop to 7-9°C (45-48°F). Rain falls on roughly 10 days per month with December being the wettest month at 75mm. January is the coolest month. The Valley of the Temples stays open year-round and winter visitors get the ruins almost to themselves. The almond trees begin flowering in late January, a precursor to the February/March Almond Blossom Festival. Pack a waterproof jacket and layers as indoor heating in budget accommodation can be limited. Hotel rates drop to their lowest point of the year: you can find double rooms at B&Bs for 50-70 EUR per night. For more details, see our Agrigento events and festivals.
Agrigento Weather by Month: Spring (March to May)
Spring is Agrigento’s finest season. March starts at 16°C (61°F) and by May the daily high reaches 23°C (73°F). Rainfall drops sharply from 45mm in March to just 20mm in May with only 4 rainy days. The countryside is green and the Valle dei Templi is carpeted with wildflowers. The Almond Blossom Festival (Sagra del Mandorlo in Fiore) runs in late February to early March with folk music, parades, and food stalls. April and May are ideal for walking the full 2km temple route without the punishing summer heat. Sea temperatures are still cool at 16-18°C (61-64°F), so swimming is for the brave. Hotel prices start rising in April when European visitors begin arriving. For more details, see our Agrigento neighborhoods guide.

Summer is hot, dry, and bright. June averages 27°C (81°F) with just 2 rainy days. The Valley of the Temples has minimal shade so visit between 8:00 and 10:30 or after 17:00. The site stays open until 19:00 (last entry 18:00) in summer. August is Italy’s national holiday month so expect full hotels, higher prices (doubles from 120 EUR), and crowded beaches. Book accommodation 6-8 weeks ahead for August.
