Sanremo sits on the Italian Riviera in northwestern Liguria, just 20 kilometers from the French border. Its Mediterranean climate is one of the mildest in Italy, with the Maritime Alps blocking cold northern winds and the Ligurian Sea moderating temperatures year-round. The city averages 2,700 sunshine hours annually and sees about 750mm of rainfall, concentrated in autumn and early winter. Sea temperatures peak at 24°C (75°F) in August and drop to 13°C (55°F) in February. This microclimate is why Sanremo earned its nickname Citta dei Fiori (City of Flowers), with commercial flower cultivation possible even in mid-winter.

Sanremo Weather by Month: Seasonal Guide
Winter (December to February) in Sanremo
Sanremo winters are among the warmest in northern Italy. Daytime temperatures hover at 12 to 13C (54 to 55F), with nighttime lows occasionally dipping to 5C (41F) during cold snaps. Snow is virtually unknown at sea level, though you might spot it on the Maritime Alps peaks visible from the city. December and January each see about 6 rainy days, but precipitation usually comes in short bursts rather than all-day downpours. The sun averages 4 hours per day in December and January, climbing to 5 by February. Pack a medium-weight jacket and layers: the seafront promenade can feel chilly when the tramontana wind blows down from the mountains. The Sanremo Music Festival fills hotels every February, so winter is far from a dead season here. For more, see our things to do.
Spring (March to May) in Sanremo
Spring is when Sanremo truly lives up to its City of Flowers reputation. March starts at 15C (59F) and by May, daytime highs reach a pleasant 21C (70F). Rainfall tapers from 68mm in March to 48mm in May, with rain days holding steady at 5 to 6 per month. The surrounding valleys burst with mimosa, carnations, and roses cultivated for export across Europe. The Milan-Sanremo cycling classic finishes here on the third Saturday of March. Sunshine climbs from 6 hours in March to 8 in May. Sea temperatures warm from 13C to 17C, still cool for swimming but comfortable for coastal walks on the 24-kilometer cycle path. For more, see our events and festivals.
Summer (June to August) in Sanremo
Summer brings Sanremo’s best beach weather. June is nearly perfect: 25C (77F) highs, just 3 rain days, and sea temperatures reaching 21C (70F). July and August peak at 28C (82F) during the day, with nights staying around 21C (70F). Humidity stays moderate thanks to the sea breeze. July is the driest month at just 15mm of rainfall over 2 days. The beach establishments (bagni) along the Lungomare are fully operational from June through mid-September. Sea temperatures reach 23 to 24C (73 to 75F), warm enough for extended swimming. Book beach chairs and umbrellas at Bagni Paradiso or Bagni La Milanese: a full-day sunbed rental runs 25 to 35 euros in August. For more, see our neighborhoods guide.
Autumn (September to November) in Sanremo
September remains warm and summerlike with 25C (77F) highs and sea temperatures of 22C (72F). The first half of the month still feels like summer, with beach clubs open and 7 hours of daily sun. October brings the transition: temperatures drop to 21C (70F), sea temperatures to 19C (66F), and rainfall jumps to 115mm over 7 wet days. November is the wettest month at 98mm and the greyest at just 4 hours of sun. The Sanremo Rally runs in October, and the Targa Florio Classica vintage car event passes through. Pack a rain jacket for October and November visits: the Riviera dei Fiori gets genuine Mediterranean autumn storms, not just light drizzle. For more, see our where to stay guide.
