Tenerife Events: Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife
The Santa Cruz Carnival is the second-largest Carnival celebration in the world (after Rio de Janeiro), running for 2-3 weeks in February (occasionally early March). The 2026 dates are February 11 to March 1. Key events: the Carnival Queen gala (Gala de la Reina) on the Wednesday of the first week , an extravagant televised competition with massive feathered costumes weighing up to 150kg. The Grand Parade (Coso Apoteosis) on Carnival Tuesday fills the streets with 100+ comparsas (dance troupes), murgas (satirical singing groups), and decorated floats from 4:00 PM until midnight. Tenerife Events: Corpus Christi Flower Carpets (La Orotava)
Corpus Christi (60 days after Easter Sunday, usually late May or June) is celebrated across the island but reaches its artistic peak in La Orotava. The town hall plaza (Plaza del Ayuntamiento) hosts a massive 900m² tapestry made entirely of colored volcanic sands from Teide National Park, taking 30 artists two weeks to create. Streets throughout the old town are covered in intricate flower petal carpets (alfombras) depicting religious and Canarian motifs. The main day is the Thursday of Corpus Christi when the religious procession walks over the flower carpets. Streets close to traffic from early morning. Tenerife Events: Romerías (Pilgrimage Festivals)
Romerías are traditional Canarian pilgrimages where entire towns dress in traditional costume, decorate ox-drawn carts, and parade to a rural shrine with music, dancing, and free food and wine handed to spectators. The largest is the Romería de San Roque in Garachico (August 16th) with 20+ carts and 2,000+ participants. The Romería de San Isidro Labrador in La Orotava (Sunday closest to May 15th) fills the town with traditional music groups (parrandas). The Romería de la Virgen de Candelaria in Candelaria (August 14-15) draws pilgrims from across the island walking to the basilica, some barefoot. Christmas in Tenerife is warm (20-22°C / 68-72°F) and uniquely Canarian. The main celebration is Nochebuena (Christmas Eve) with family dinners of roast lamb or fish.
