Getting to Lucca: Nearest Airports
Pisa International Airport (PSA, Galileo Galilei) is the closest at 35km (22 miles). The PisaMover shuttle (β¬5, every 5-8 minutes) connects the airport to Pisa Centrale station in 5 minutes. From Pisa Centrale, regional trains to Lucca run every 30 minutes (β¬3.90, 25-minute journey). Total door-to-door: about 1 hour, under β¬10. Florence Airport (FLR, Amerigo Vespucci) is 75km away. Take the T2 tram (β¬1.70) from the airport to Florence Santa Maria Novella station (20 minutes), then a regional train to Lucca (β¬7.60, 80 minutes). Bologna Airport (BLQ) is 160km away and mainly useful as a budget airline hub: shuttle to Bologna Centrale, then train via Florence (total ~3 hours, β¬25 to β¬35).
Arriving by Train
Lucca’s train station sits directly outside Porta San Pietro (the southern gate). Walk straight ahead through the gate and you’re inside the walls in 2 minutes. Regional trains connect Lucca to Pisa (25 min, β¬3.90), Florence (80 min, β¬7.60), Viareggio (15 min, β¬3.20), and Aulla (for the Cinque Terre, 70 min, β¬8.00). No high-speed trains serve Lucca directly; the nearest Frecciarossa/Italo station is Florence SMN. Train tickets must be validated in the green machines on the platform before boarding: unvalidated tickets carry a β¬50 fine. The station has a staffed ticket office (open 6:30am to 8:30pm), automatic machines (accept cards and cash), and a small cafe.
Arriving by Car and Parking
You cannot drive inside the walls: the ZTL (limited traffic zone) is camera-enforced and fines are β¬80+. Park outside. The largest lots are Parcheggio Mazzini (east of Porta Elisa, β¬1/hour, β¬8/day), Parcheggio Carducci (near the train station, β¬1.50/hour), and Parcheggio Palatucci (north side, free but a 10-minute walk). Many hotels outside the walls offer free parking; inside the walls, almost none do. If your hotel is inside the walls, drop bags at the nearest gate and then park. The walls are ringed by blue-line parking (β¬1 to β¬1.50/hour, 8am to 8pm, free overnight and Sundays). Pay at the meter and display the ticket on your dashboard.
Getting Around Lucca
Lucca is a walking city. Everything inside the walls is reachable in 15 minutes on foot. The cobblestones are uneven in places: leave heels at home and bring flat shoes. Bicycles are the local transport of choice: rental shops charge β¬4/hour or β¬15/day (Poli Bikes, Piazza Santa Maria 42; Cicli Bizzarri, Piazza Santa Maria 32). Most hotels offer free bikes to guests. The 4.2km wall circuit is car-free and flat, making it the best urban cycling route in Tuscany. The local bus network (VaiBus) serves the suburbs but you won’t need it unless you’re staying well outside. Single tickets cost β¬1.50 from tabacchi shops. Taxis wait at the train station and Piazza Napoleone; a ride across the city costs β¬8 to β¬12.
Money, Tipping, and Practical Details
Italy uses the euro (β¬). Most places inside the walls accept cards, but smaller trattorias, market stalls, and some tower/museum entries (including Guinigi Tower) are cash-only. Carry β¬50 in cash. ATMs (bancomat) are on Via Fillungo and Piazza San Michele. Tipping isn’t expected: restaurants add a coperto (cover charge, β¬1.50 to β¬3 per person, listed on the menu). If service was exceptional, round up the bill or leave β¬1 to β¬2. Tap water is safe to drink throughout Lucca. Public toilets are scarce inside the walls: the main one is at the tourist office on Piazzale Verdi (β¬0.50). Plan to use cafe or restaurant facilities.
Day Trips from Lucca
Pisa (25 minutes by train, β¬3.90 each way). The Leaning Tower complex is a 20-minute walk from Pisa Centrale station. Book tower tickets online at least a week ahead (β¬20, 30-minute time slot). Florence (80 minutes by train, β¬7.60 each way). The Uffizi and Accademia (David) require advance booking. Viareggio (15 minutes by train, β¬3.20 each way) for beaches and the Liberty-style seafront promenade. The Cinque Terre (about 90 minutes via Pisa and La Spezia) is doable as a long day trip. The Garfagnana valley north of Lucca (reachable by bus or car in 40 minutes) has the Devil’s Bridge at Borgo a Mozzano and the Grotta del Vento cave system.
Food and Dining Tips
Lucchese cuisine is distinct within Tuscany. Order tortelli lucchesi (pasta filled with meat and herbs, served with ragu), buccellato (a sweet anise-flavored bread ring), and farro soup (zuppa di farro della Garfagnana). Restaurants serve lunch from 12:30pm to 2:30pm and dinner from 7:30pm to 10:30pm. Outside these hours, you’ll find only cafes serving sandwiches and pastries. Trattoria da Leo (Via Tegrimi 1, lunch only, no reservations, cash only) is the best-value meal in Lucca: β¬10 pasta plates, β¬6 house wine. Gelateria Veneta (Via Vittorio Veneto 22) has been serving gelato since 1938. For aperitivo, head to Via Fillungo or Piazza dell’Anfiteatro around 6pm to 8pm: a spritz or Negroni with snacks runs β¬6 to β¬10.

Safety and Practical Information
Lucca is very safe. Violent crime is rare; the main risk is pickpocketing in crowded areas during the Summer Festival and Lucca Comics. Keep your phone in a front pocket and don’t leave bags on the back of chairs at outdoor cafes. The emergency number is 112 (European-wide). The nearest hospital with an emergency room is Ospedale San Luca (Via Guglielmo Lippi Francesconi, 2km north of the walls). Pharmacies are marked with a green cross: Farmacia Centrale (Via Fillungo 180) and Farmacia San Martino (Piazza San Martino 5) are inside the walls. Pharmacies rotate night and weekend duty: the schedule is posted on every pharmacy door.
