You’ll get the best of Lucca between mid-April and mid-June, and again from September through mid-October. These shoulder months give you warm days (18 to 27°C), manageable crowds, and hotel prices roughly 25 to 35% lower than peak summer. July and August are hot and packed, but the Lucca Summer Festival on Piazza Napoleone draws world-class musicians. November and February are the quietest months: you’ll find the lowest room rates and have the medieval streets nearly to yourself, though you’ll need a rain jacket and an umbrella.
Best Time to Visit Lucca: Spring (April to June)
April through mid-June is ideal. Daytime highs climb from 18°C (64°F) in April to 27°C (81°F) by late June. Rain is moderate (65 to 75mm monthly). The wisteria on Piazza San Frediano peaks in late April. The city walls’ 4.2km tree-lined promenade bursts with green. Hotel rates are reasonable: a mid-range double room inside the walls runs €100 to €150 per night in April, rising toward €180 by late June. Book at least 6 weeks ahead for May weekends. The Lucca Botanical Garden (founded 1820) is at its finest in May.
Best Time to Visit Lucca: Summer (July to August)
July and August bring peak heat with daytime highs of 30 to 31°C (86 to 88°F) and high humidity. Rainfall is low (25 to 40mm monthly), but the heat can be draining for sightseeing. The Lucca Summer Festival runs through July on Piazza Napoleone with acts like Bob Dylan, Nick Cave, and Sting (tickets €40 to €90). Hotels charge premium rates: expect €180 to €300 for a mid-range double. Italian holidaymakers flood the city around Ferragosto (August 15), and many family-run shops close for the week. If you come in summer, do your walking before 11am and after 5pm, and book a hotel with air conditioning (not all historic buildings inside the walls have it).
Best Time to Visit Lucca: Autumn (September to October)
September offers weather almost as good as June: highs of 26°C (79°F), 7 hours of sunshine, and noticeably fewer crowds after the first week. The Settembre Lucchese festival fills the month with markets, concerts, and a medieval crossbow tournament at the Luminara di Santa Croce on September 13. October cools to 20°C (68°F) with more rain (120mm). The big draw is Lucca Comics and Games, held over 4 days around October 31 to November 2. It’s Europe’s largest comic convention, drawing 300,000+ visitors. If you’re not attending the festival, avoid Lucca those days: hotel prices triple and the entire walled city becomes one enormous cosplay zone.

Best Time to Visit Lucca: Winter (November to March)
November is the wettest month (120mm over 12 days) with gray skies and only 3 hours of daily sun. December through February stays cool: highs of 11 to 12°C (52 to 54°F), lows near 2°C (36°F). The Christmas market in Piazza San Michele runs from early December through January 6. January and February are the cheapest months: you’ll find 4-star hotels inside the walls for under €90 a night. Many smaller restaurants close for the first two weeks of January. If you don’t mind damp weather and limited daylight, winter gives you Lucca’s medieval streets without any tour groups. Carnival in February brings small parades and costumed children through the old town.
