Taormina Film Festival

Usually held the last week of June or first week of July at Teatro Greco, this festival dates to 1955 and has hosted Elizabeth Taylor, Marlene Dietrich, and more recently Tom Cruise and Richard Gere. Evening screenings take place in the ancient theatre under the stars with Mount Etna as the backdrop. The festival also includes red carpet events at the Teatro Antico, Q&A sessions, and the Nastro d’Argento (Italian film critics’ awards). Tickets for individual screenings cost EUR 15-30 and go on sale in early June through the festival website. Book accommodation for festival dates 4-6 months in advance as hotels fill completely.

Running July through September, Taormina Arte is the umbrella arts festival programming opera, classical concerts, ballet, jazz, and theatre at Teatro Greco and other venues. Past performers include the Royal Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic, Placido Domingo, and touring Broadway productions. Events are spread across the summer with 3-5 performances per week in peak months. Tickets range from EUR 25 for contemporary music to EUR 100+ for premium opera seats, available through the Taormina Arte box office on Corso Umberto or online at taormina-arte.com. The programme is typically announced in April.

Ferragosto (August 15)

The national Italian summer holiday falls on August 15 with the Feast of the Assumption. Taormina marks it with a religious procession carrying the statue of the Madonna through Corso Umberto in the morning, followed by fireworks over the bay at midnight. The entire week around Ferragosto sees the town at maximum capacity with Italian families on holiday. Restaurants require reservations, beach lidos are fully booked, and hotel rates peak. If you plan to visit during this period, book everything 3-4 months ahead.

Giuseppe Sinopoli Festival

Held over a week in early October, this classical music festival honours the late Italian conductor and composer Giuseppe Sinopoli, who had strong ties to Taormina. The programme features chamber music, orchestral works, and contemporary compositions performed at Teatro Greco and the Palazzo dei Congressi. Tickets cost EUR 15-40. The festival draws a smaller, dedicated audience compared to the summer events, creating a more intimate atmosphere.

Christmas Season (December)

From early December through Epiphany (January 6), Taormina decorates Corso Umberto with lights and sets up a Christmas market in Piazza IX Aprile and Piazza Duomo. Stalls sell Sicilian crafts, ceramics, local foods, and mulled wine. The town also arranges elaborate presepe (nativity scenes) displays, with a large mechanical nativity scene typically set up near the Palazzo dei Congressi. The atmosphere is festive but quieter than summer; many restaurants close for winter break, but enough stay open to serve visitors. January 6 (Epiphany) brings the Befana tradition with a parade and sweets for children.

Taormina Events and Festivals: Food and Religious

Easter Week (March or April, varies)

Easter in Taormina features processions on Good Friday with hooded confraternities carrying religious statues through Corso Umberto. Easter Sunday brings Mass at the Duomo followed by family feasts at restaurants. This is the unofficial start of the tourist season and many hotels reopen after winter closures for Easter weekend. Weather is variable (14-18Β°C / 57-64Β°F) but usually dry enough for outdoor activities.

Festa di San Pancrazio (July 9)

Taormina’s patron saint day honours San Pancrazio with a morning Mass at the Duomo, an afternoon procession carrying the saint’s silver statue through the streets, and evening festivities. The procession route goes along Corso Umberto and into the side streets, accompanied by the town band. Fireworks close the day at 11pm from a platform near the Greek Theatre. Local restaurants offer fixed-price menus for the occasion.

Sicily Food Festival (various dates)

Taormina hosts occasional food and wine festivals, typically in spring (April-May) and autumn (October), showcasing Sicilian products: cannoli, granita, arancini, Nero d’Avola and Etna DOC wines, olive oil, and pistachios from Bronte. These pop-up events usually take over Piazza IX Aprile for a weekend with tasting stalls and cooking demonstrations. Check the Taormina tourism office on Corso Umberto for exact dates; the schedule varies year to year.
