Siena’s event calendar is dominated by the Palio, the raw and intense twice-yearly horse race that has defined the city for centuries. But beyond the Palio, the city hosts jazz festivals, classical music series, food sagre in surrounding villages, and a traditional Christmas market. This guide covers the major annual events with dates, locations, and practical tips for attending.
Siena Events: Palio di Siena
The Palio di Siena is the most famous horse race in Italy and one of the most intense civic events in the world. It is not a tourist attraction , it is a deep-rooted tradition that has been running since the 1600s (with earlier versions dating to medieval times). Ten of the city’s 17 contrade (districts) compete in each race, with horses and riders drawn by lot. The race itself lasts about 90 seconds on a dirt track laid around Piazza del Campo. The winning contrada celebrates for weeks.
Palio di Provenzano (July 2)
Held in honour of the Madonna of Provenzano. Four days of trial races (prove) lead up to the main event on July 2 at 19:30 (7:30 PM). The Corteo Storico, a historical parade with 600 participants in medieval costume, begins at 17:00 and precedes the race. The centre of the piazza is free to enter (come by 11:00 for a spot) but offers no shade and no bathroom access for hours. Balcony and window seats in surrounding buildings cost €200-500. The area fills to extreme density , roughly 40,000 people pack into a space for 30,000. Do not attend if you are claustrophobic. Bring water, a hat, and sunscreen for the July heat.
Palio dell’Assunta (August 16)
Dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, this second Palio follows the same format as the July race. The August heat is similar to July , highs of 30°C (86°F) , but the August 16 date is part of the Ferragosto holiday period and draws even larger crowds. Trial races run on August 13, 14, and 15. The Corteo Storico starts at 17:00 and the race at 19:30. Book accommodation months in advance if visiting specifically for the Palio, and be prepared to pay 3-4x normal rates with minimum-stay requirements.
Siena Events: Music Festivals
Siena Jazz Festival
Running since 1977, the Siena Jazz Festival takes place from late July through mid-August at venues across the city including the Fortezza Medicea, Piazza del Campo, and the Accademia Musicale Chigiana. The festival attracts international jazz artists and runs in parallel with the Siena Jazz summer school, one of Italy’s most respected jazz education programmes. Many outdoor concerts are free. Tickets for headline events at the Fortezza Medicea cost €10-20. Check the official programme at sienajazz.it for the current year’s lineup.
Settimana Musicale Senese (Chigiana International Festival)
The Accademia Musicale Chigiana, housed in the 14th-century Palazzo Chigi Saracini on Via di Città , runs a classical music festival each summer from early July through early September. Events include symphony concerts, chamber music, and opera performances by students and faculty of this prestigious music academy. Tickets range from €10-30 depending on the event. The academy’s concert hall is a gilded Rococo salon worth seeing in its own right. Programme details at chigiana.it.
Siena Events: Food & Cultural Festivals
Sagre (Food Festivals) in Tuscany
From September through November, villages within 30km of Siena host sagre celebrating local products. These are not tourist events , they are community feasts with long communal tables, paper plates, and food cooked by volunteers. Notable nearby sagre include: Sagra del Fungo Porcino in Monticiano (October, porcini mushrooms), Sagra della Castagna in Monticiano and Murlo (October-November, chestnuts), and the Festa dell’Olio Nuovo across the Chianti region (November, new-press olive oil). Meals typically cost €15-25 for a multi-course dinner. Check local tourism office listings as dates vary by year.
Mercato nel Campo (Christmas Market)
On the first weekend of December (Friday through Sunday), Piazza del Campo transforms into a traditional Christmas market with about 150 wooden stalls. Vendors sell Tuscan food products (panforte, ricciarelli, pecorino cheese, truffle oil, vin brulé), artisan crafts, and Christmas gifts. The market recreates the atmosphere of the medieval market that once occupied the square. Free entry. Hours are typically 9:00 to 20:00 Friday and Saturday, 9:00 to 19:00 Sunday. The Christmas lights and decorations stay up through January 6 (Epiphany).
Capodanno (New Year’s Eve) in Piazza del Campo
Siena’s New Year’s Eve celebration centres on Piazza del Campo with a free open-air concert starting around 22:00 (10:00 PM) and fireworks at midnight. The crowd is a mix of locals and visitors, with a lively but generally safe atmosphere. Dress warmly , December nights average 2°C (36°F). Many restaurants offer multi-course cenone (New Year’s Eve dinner) for €80-150 per person; book by early December.
