Cordoba Events and Festivals: Patios, Feria, Semana Santa & Guitar Festival

Spain › Andalusia › Córdoba

Cordoba’s event calendar is front-loaded into May, when three major festivals pack the city with flowers, flamenco, and religious tradition. The rest of the year offers a guitar festival, Holy Week processions, and seasonal markets. The Patios Festival alone draws over 200,000 visitors. Events and Festivals in Cordoba: The May Block

Fiesta de los Patios (First two weeks of May)

Cordoba’s most famous festival, a competition and open-house event where residents of the historic centre open their private courtyard gardens (patios) to the public. About 50 patios participate each year, concentrated in the Alcazar Viejo district (between the Alcazar and San Basilio), with additional patios in Santa Marina and Santiago. Each patio is an explosion of potted geraniums, bougainvillea, jasmine, and climbing roses arranged around central fountains, wells, and tilework. Entry is free. Maps are available at tourist offices. Visit weekdays between 10:00 and 14:00 for the smallest crowds. The tradition dates to the 1920s and was added to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2012. Accommodation in May should be booked 3 to 4 months ahead.

Cruces de Mayo (First weekend of May)

Overlapping with the Patios, plazas and street corners throughout the city, especially in the Juderia and San Basilio districts, erect large crosses decorated with flowers, shawls, and copper pots. Each cross (cruz) is accompanied by a bar serving montaditos (small sandwiches), fino sherry, and rebujito (sherry with Sprite, the unofficial drink of Andalusian festivals). Neighbourhood associations compete for the most elaborate cross. The atmosphere is informal and local, less touristy than the Patios. Evening is the best time, when the crosses are lit and the bars are at full swing.

Feria de Cordoba (Last week of May)

Cordoba’s annual fair, held at the Arenal fairground on the south bank of the Guadalquivir, 2 km from the Mezquita. About 150 casetas (private and public tents) fill the grounds, with the public municipal caseta open to all visitors. The fair opens with the alumbrao (lighting ceremony) on Saturday night and runs for a week. During the day, the grounds fill with horse-drawn carriages and riders in traditional dress; at night, the casetas host flamenco and sevillanas dancing. The fair is smaller and less commercial than Seville’s, with a more local feel. Entry to public casetas is free; drinks inside cost 3 to 5 euros (a rebujito is about 4 euros). Dress smart-casual; locals dress up significantly.

Events and Festivals in Cordoba: Religious Traditions

Semana Santa (March or April, dates vary)

Holy Week in Cordoba is less famous than in Seville or Malaga but perhaps more moving for its intimacy. About 37 brotherhoods (cofradias) process through the narrow Juderia streets, carrying elaborate pasos (religious floats) from their home churches to the cathedral and back. The processions run from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, with the most important on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday (Madrugada). The route through the Roman bridge and the narrow Calleja de las Flores is especially atmospheric. Processions begin around 20:00 and can last until 02:00. Free to watch from the streets; balconies are privately rented. Book hotel rooms 4+ months ahead if your visit coincides.

Events and Festivals in Cordoba: Summer

Festival de la Guitarra de Cordoba (First two weeks of July)

One of Europe’s premier guitar festivals, attracting world-class flamenco, classical, jazz, and blues guitarists. The main concerts are held at the Teatro de la Axerquia (an open-air venue in the city centre) and in the gardens of the Alcazar. Past performers include Paco de Lucia, Bob Dylan, and Mark Knopfler. Tickets range from 15 to 50 euros depending on the artist. Master classes and workshops run alongside the concerts. Evenings only (the July heat rules out daytime outdoor events). Book tickets at guitarracordoba.org from April onwards.

Events and Festivals in Cordoba: Winter

Nativity Scenes (Belén) Trail (December to January 6)

Cordoba has a strong belenismo tradition (the art of nativity scene building). About 40 churches, convents, public buildings, and private associations display elaborate nativity scenes (belenes) during the Christmas season. The city tourist office publishes a map each year. The most impressive are at the Diputacion de Cordoba (Plaza de Colon) and the church of San Francisco. Free entry to all. A pleasant way to explore the Juderia’s churches during the mild December weather (15 degrees C / 59 degrees F).
