Chicago Events and Festivals: Lollapalooza, Taste and Year-Round Calendar

United States β€Ί Illinois β€Ί Chicago

Chicago’s event calendar is built around its brief but brilliant summer, when over 350 neighborhood street festivals, major music events, and food celebrations pack the period from May through September. The city also goes all-in on Christmas with one of the country’s best holiday markets. Winter and spring are quieter but host Restaurant Week and St. Patrick’s Day (Chicago dyes its river green). Here is the full calendar. For festival-area hotel strategies, see where to stay in Chicago.

Chicago Events and Festivals: Summer Music and Food Festivals

Taste of Chicago (Early July, Grant Park)

One of the world’s largest food festivals, typically running 3-5 days around the first weekend of July. Over 70 restaurants serve “taste portions” at US$4-8 each, allowing you to sample across Chicago’s food scene from deep-dish pizza to Michelin-starred tasting menus. Free admission. Music stages feature national headliners (past acts include The Roots, Chaka Khan, Death Cab for Cutie). The festival draws 1.5 million visitors over its run. Best strategy: go on a weekday afternoon for shorter lines, or buy the Taste O’Pass (US$45-65) for priority access. Grant Park, bounded by Michigan Avenue and Lake Shore Drive. L: Adams/Wabash or Jackson (Red Line). For food neighborhood deep-dives, see things to do in Chicago.

Lollapalooza (Late July/Early August, Grant Park)

One of the world’s largest music festivals with 170+ acts across 8 stages over 4 days, drawing 400,000 attendees. Headliners span rock, hip-hop, EDM, and pop. 4-day general admission passes start from US$385 (tier 1) to US$450+ (final tier). Single-day tickets: US$135-150. Tickets sell out within hours of release. The festival occupies the entirety of Grant Park, closing Michigan Avenue and Columbus Drive sections. Hotel rates in the Loop, River North, and South Loop spike 30-50% with 2-3 night minimums. If you are not attending Lollapalooza, avoid Chicago during this weekend as downtown becomes a massive festival zone. The best time to visit Chicago guide covers Lolla pricing strategy.

Chicago Blues Festival (Early June, Millennium Park)

The world’s largest free blues festival, running 3 days in Millennium Park and the surrounding area. Past performers include Buddy Guy, Bonnie Raitt, and Shemekia Copeland. Free admission. This is a genuine cultural event celebrating Chicago’s role as the birthplace of electric blues. Bring a blanket for seating on the Great Lawn at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion. L: Washington/Wabash or Lake (Red Line).

Chicago Jazz Festival (Labor Day Weekend, Millennium Park)

A free 4-day festival over Labor Day weekend (first weekend of September) that has run since 1979. The main stage at Pritzker Pavilion hosts international headliners, while smaller stages at the Chicago Cultural Center feature emerging artists. Free admission. The combination of September weather and music in Gehry’s pavilion makes this one of Chicago’s best cultural events.

Chicago Air and Water Show (Mid-August, North Avenue Beach)

The largest free air show in the United States, running for 2 days in mid-August along the lakefront from Fullerton Avenue to Oak Street. The US Navy Blue Angels and US Air Force Thunderbirds alternate years as headliners. Viewing is free from North Avenue Beach and the lakefront trail. Arrive by 8am for beachfront spots. The L to Fullerton (Red/Brown/Purple Lines) then walk east. Alternative viewing: boat tours from Navy Pier (US$40-60) that anchor in the Playpen for the show.

Chicago Events and Festivals: Winter and Holiday Events

Christkindlmarket (Mid-November through December 24)

A traditional German Christmas market in Daley Plaza (50 W. Washington Street) modeled after the Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt, running since 1996. Wooden stalls sell handmade ornaments, nutcrackers, spicy gluhwein served in collectible ceramic boot mugs (US$9-12, reusable mug surcharge US$7), bratwurst, potato pancakes, and roasted almonds. The market is free to enter. A second location operates at Gallagher Way next to Wrigley Field in Lakeview. Open Sunday-Thursday 11am-8pm, Friday-Saturday 11am-9pm. Closed Thanksgiving Day. The mugs change designs each year and are a collector’s item. The Chicago neighborhoods guide covers the Loop area.

Chicago Restaurant Week (Late January/Early February)

A 17-day event with prix-fixe menus at 400+ restaurants across the city. Brunch/lunch menus US$25, dinner US$42-59. This is the best opportunity to try restaurants that normally cost US$100+ per person at a fraction of the price. Participating restaurants range from neighborhood favorites to Michelin-starred spots like Sepia and EL Ideas. Book 2-3 weeks ahead for popular restaurants. This is intentionally scheduled during the slowest tourism period to drive local dining traffic, so hotel rates are at their annual lowest. The best time to visit Chicago guide covers winter hotel deals.

For neighborhood street festivals (Wicker Park Fest, Do Division, Andersonville Midsommarfest, etc.), see the Chicago neighborhoods guide which covers each area’s annual events.
