Palermo Events Festivals

Italy โ€บ Sicily โ€บ Palermo

Palermo’s festival calendar peaks in July with the Festino di Santa Rosalia, the city’s defining religious and civic celebration. The year brings Carnevale parades in February, Easter processions across the historic centre and a growing roster of cultural events in a city rediscovering its identity after decades of neglect.

Festino di Santa Rosalia (U Fistinu)

Palermo’s most important festival, held annually on July 14-15, celebrating Santa Rosalia, the city’s patron saint who is credited with ending a plague in 1624. On the evening of July 14, a massive chariot carrying the saint’s statue processes from the Palermo Cathedral down Corso Vittorio Emanuele to the waterfront at Porta Felice, accompanied by marching bands, fire-eaters and 200,000 spectators. Fireworks over the harbour conclude the night around midnight. July 15 is a city holiday with a daytime procession and a solemn mass in the cathedral. All events are free. The city centre streets along the route close to traffic from 18:00. Book restaurants on the route weeks ahead. July weather: 30ยฐC (86ยฐF) typical, see Palermo weather by month for the sirocco risk.

Carnevale di Palermo

Palermo’s Carnevale runs for 10 days in February (ending on Martedi Grasso, Fat Tuesday). The main events are parades of floats and costumed performers along Via della Liberta and Piazza Politeama, with the closing parade on Fat Tuesday being the largest. More family-oriented than Venice’s Carnevale, with children in costumes and confetti battles. Free to watch. February weather is cool (15ยฐC/59ยฐF) with 57mm of rain; the parades are weather-dependent and may be rescheduled in heavy rain.

Settimana Santa (Holy Week and Easter)

Palermo’s Easter processions are solemn, elaborate affairs concentrated in the Kalsa and Albergheria districts. The main events: the Via Crucis on Good Friday evening through the streets of the Kalsa, with hooded confraternity members carrying crosses and statues of the dead Christ. On Easter Sunday, the “A Scontru” (the meeting) in front of the cathedral where the statues of the risen Christ and the Virgin Mary meet. Free to watch. Dates vary (March or April). April weather averages 19ยฐC (66ยฐF) with 43mm of rain.

Manifesta and Contemporary Art

Palermo hosted Manifesta 12, the European contemporary art biennial, in 2018, which catalysed a wave of gallery openings and cultural regeneration in the Kalsa district. The legacy includes several permanent installations and a September-October contemporary art programme at venues including the Palazzo Butera and the Orto Botanico.
