Porto’s event calendar peaks on the night of June 23-24 with São João, the city’s defining street festival. Beyond São João, the city runs a major contemporary arts festival, a film festival, wine harvest events in the Douro Valley, and Christmas markets. Here are the key events with dates, locations, and planning advice.
São João Festival in Porto
The night of June 23-24 is Porto’s biggest celebration, dating back to pagan summer solstice rituals. The entire city becomes a street party with grilled sardines smoking on every corner, plastic hammers (martelinhos) used to playfully tap strangers on the head, and leeks and garlic flowers (alho-porro) used in mock sword fights.
The main gathering points are the Ribeira waterfront, Avenida dos Aliados, and the area around the São João Bridge. At midnight, a fireworks display launches from the Dom Luís I Bridge over the Douro. The tradition continues until dawn with hot air balloons released from the Ribeira. The festival is free and spontaneous: no tickets needed.
The São João metro runs all night. Book accommodation 3-6 months ahead. June weather is excellent: 24°C (75°F) days, 15°C (58°F) nights, just 7 rain days. Dress casually and expect to be hit on the head with plastic hammers hundreds of times. The grilled sardines cost EUR 2-3 from street stalls. For transport tips during the festival, see our Porto travel tips and FAQ.
Serralves em Festa
Held the first weekend of June, this 40-hour nonstop contemporary arts festival takes over the Serralves Museum and gardens (Rua de Serralves 977). Free entry for the entire festival. Programming includes contemporary dance, experimental music, circus arts, performance art, and cinema across multiple stages throughout the 18-hectare park.
The festival runs from Saturday morning continuously through Sunday evening. The park’s gardens, designed by Jacques Gréber, include formal French gardens, a rose garden, and a treetop walkway. The museum itself (Álvaro Siza-designed, EUR 12 normal entry) is also free during the festival. Food stalls and bars operate throughout. Bus 502 from the center reaches Serralves. The festival draws a family-oriented crowd and is one of Portugal’s best free cultural events.
Fantasporto International Film Festival
Portugal’s largest film festival, running since 1981, takes place in late February/early March at the Rivoli Theatre (Praça Dom João I) and other venues. Known for fantasy, horror
science fiction, it also screens mainstream international cinema. Tickets: EUR 5-7 per screening, festival passes available. The program is announced in January. The festival attracts dedicated international cinephile audiences. February weather: 15°C (59°F) days, 6°C (43°F) nights, 14 rain days. All screenings are indoors.
Douro Valley Harvest Season (Vindima)
September through early October, the Douro Valley’s wine quintas harvest grapes in a tradition unchanged for centuries. Many quintas offer harvest experiences: grape picking, foot treading in stone lagares, and special harvest lunches. Quinta do Bomfim, Quinta da Pacheca, and Quinta do Vallado offer harvest programs (EUR 50-120 including activities and lunch).
Book 4-8 weeks ahead. The valley is at its most beautiful during harvest with grapes on the vines and intense activity at the quintas. September weather in the valley is hot (28-32°C / 82-90°F) and dry. The train journey from Porto to Pinhão is particularly scenic with the vineyards at their greenest. Porto Christmas Markets and New Year
Porto’s Christmas season runs from late November through early January. The main Christmas market is on Avenida dos Aliados with wooden chalets selling crafts, food, and mulled wine. The Praça da Batalha has a smaller market. The city’s Christmas lights are extensive along Aliados and Santa Catarina Street.
New Year’s Eve fireworks on the Douro (midnight, launched from the Dom Luís I Bridge area) draw crowds to the Ribeira and the Jardim do Morro in Gaia. December weather is poor: 14°C (58°F), 178mm rain over 16 days. Wear waterproof clothing and expect rain during outdoor celebrations. The Christmas markets are free to enter.
