Jaipur Neighborhoods

India β€Ί Rajasthan β€Ί Jaipur

Jaipur’s layout follows a grid plan designed in 1727 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, making it one of India’s earliest planned cities. The city divides into the walled Pink City (old city), the modern suburbs south and west, and the hillside roads leading to the forts. Most visitors spend their time in the Pink City for shopping and sightseeing, while the areas around MI Road and the southern suburbs offer quieter accommodation with better restaurants.

Jaipur Neighborhoods: Where to Stay and Explore

The Pink City (Old Jaipur)

Bounded by the original city walls with seven gates, the Pink City is Jaipur’s historic core. The boundaries run from Chandpole Gate (west) to Surajpole Gate (east), Ajmeri Gate (south) to Zorawar Singh Gate (north). This 6.7 square kilometer area contains the City Palace, Hawa Mahal, Jantar Mantar, and all major bazaars. The lanes are narrow and chaotic with a mix of scooters, auto-rickshaws, cows, and camel carts. It’s the most atmospheric part of Jaipur with everything painted terracotta pink. Average hotel prices range 1,500-8,000 INR ($18-$96) per night depending on whether you choose a basic guesthouse or a restored haveli. The Pink City suits shoppers, photographers, and first-time visitors who want to walk to the major sights. Noise levels are high from 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM. Most budget and mid-range hotels here are in converted havelis around Tripolia Bazaar and Chandpole.

MI Road and C-Scheme Area

Mirza Ismail Road (MI Road) is Jaipur’s main commercial artery running north-south from Sanganeri Gate to the Railway Station. The C-Scheme neighborhood west of MI Road was planned in the 1940s with wide boulevards and government buildings. This area has Jaipur’s best concentration of mid-range and upscale restaurants, including the original Lassiwala, Copper Chimney (North Indian), and Niros (multi-cuisine, open since 1949). Average hotel prices range 3,000-15,000 INR ($36-$180). The area suits travelers who want modern amenities while staying close to the old city (10-minute auto-rickshaw ride). The Panch Batti intersection is the main landmark. Rajasthan Tourism’s RTDC Hotel Gangaur is here for a reliable government-run mid-range option at 2,500-3,500 INR.

Bani Park and Collectorate Area

North of the old city beyond Chandpole Gate, Bani Park is a leafy residential neighborhood with wide streets and less traffic than the Pink City. It’s 2 km north of the old city, a 50 INR auto-rickshaw ride. The area has a high concentration of heritage havelis converted into boutique guesthouses with courtyard gardens and rooftop restaurants. Average hotel prices range 2,000-6,000 INR ($24-$72). The railway station is a 5-minute drive. Bani Park suits travelers who want a quiet retreat at a reasonable price. The Durgapura flyover provides quick access to the Jaipur-Delhi highway for day trips. Several excellent vegetarian rooftop restaurants line the main Station Road.

Amber and the Northern Hills

The Amber area, 11 km north of central Jaipur, sits at the base of the Aravalli hills with Amber Fort looming above. This area has luxury heritage resorts set in former royal hunting lodges and restored forts. It’s far from the city’s shopping and dining, making it impractical for first-time visitors but ideal for a 1 or 2-night splurge. Average hotel prices range 8,000-40,000 INR ($96-$480). The area suits couples and luxury travelers who prioritize a resort experience over urban exploration. An auto-rickshaw to the Pink City costs 400-500 INR one-way and takes 25-30 minutes. The Kunda village nearby has silver jewelry workshops where you can watch artisans at work.

Malviya Nagar and JLN Marg

South of the old city, Malviya Nagar and the area around Jawahar Lal Nehru Marg is a modern residential neighborhood with shopping malls (World Trade Park, GT Central), multiplex cinemas, and chain restaurants. It’s 7 km from the old city, a 150 INR auto-rickshaw ride. Average hotel prices range 2,500-7,000 INR ($30-$84). The area suits business travelers and visitors who want modern Indian city life with air-conditioned malls and coffee shops. The Jaipur International Airport is 3 km away on the southern edge. The area has the best access to the Jaipur-Delhi Expressway for arrivals by road.
