Lyon’s event calendar is anchored by the Fete des Lumieres, one of Europe’s largest light festivals, and the Nuits de Fourviere, a summer-long performing arts festival in a Roman amphitheatre. The city also hosts a major dance biennial and a classical music festival.

Fete des Lumieres (Festival of Lights) , December 8 Weekend (4 Days)

Lyon’s defining event draws approximately 1.8 million visitors over 4 nights (Thursday through Sunday around December 8). The tradition dates to 1852, when Lyonnais placed candles in their windows to honor the Virgin Mary. Today, it involves 40+ large-scale light installations by international artists projected onto the city’s landmark buildings.

Key installations are at Place des Terreaux, Place Bellecour, the Cathedrale Saint-Jean

the Fourviere Basilica. The full program is published in November at fetedeslumieres.lyon.fr. The event is free and outdoor. Temperatures average 7°C (45°F) with possible rain , dress in layers, wear waterproof shoes, and expect to walk 7 to 10km per evening between installations. Hotels sell out by September. Restaurants require reservations 2 to 3 weeks ahead. The metro runs extended hours until approximately 02:00 on festival nights. Pickpocketing is elevated , carry bags cross-body and keep phones in inside pockets.

Nuits de Fourviere , June and July (2 Months)

A performing arts festival in the 2,000-year-old Roman theatre on Fourviere hill. The program includes approximately 60 performances: international music acts, theater, dance, and opera. The 2024 lineup included PJ Harvey, AIR, and the Lyon Opera Ballet. Tickets range from 30 to 80 EUR, sold at nuitsdefourviere.com starting in April.

The venue seats 4,500 with excellent acoustics and a view of the city lights below. Performances start at 21:30 or 22:00 to take advantage of sunset. Bring a cushion , the stone seating is hard after 2 hours. A bar on site serves wine and light food. The funicular from Vieux Lyon runs extended hours on performance nights.

Biennale de la Danse , September (Odd-Numbered Years)

One of Europe’s largest dance festivals, held in odd-numbered years (next: 2025, 2027). The 3-week program includes contemporary dance performances at the Maison de la Danse, the Opera de Lyon

various venues across the city. A highlight is the outdoor Defile (parade) through the Presqu’ile, where 4,500+ amateur dancers from community groups perform choreographed routines. The Defile is free to watch and draws 300,000 spectators , arrive by 13:00 for a spot on Rue de la Republique. Performance tickets range from 15 to 50 EUR. Festival Berlioz , Late August to Early September

A classical music festival honoring composer Hector Berlioz, held in his birthplace of La Cote-Saint-Andre (55km southeast of Lyon) and at venues in Lyon itself. The festival runs 10 days with approximately 15 concerts. Tickets from 15 to 60 EUR. The program features Berlioz’s major works (Symphonie Fantastique, Requiem) alongside other Romantic-era composers. A shuttle bus from Lyon runs on concert days (details at festivalberlioz.com).
