Best Time to Visit Osaka

Japan › Osaka › Osaka

Osaka has two sweet spots for weather (April-May and October-November), two seasons to actively avoid (the June-July rainy season and August heat)

two festival-driven surges that book out hotels (cherry blossom season in late March/early April and autumn foliage in November).

Unlike Tokyo, Osaka doesn’t have a major year-end event like New Year’s at Meiji Shrine, but the city’s winter illuminations and temple visits (hatsumode) draw crowds from December 31-January 3. This guide uses Osaka weather data to help you pick the right travel window.

Best Time to Visit Osaka for Good Weather

The best weather windows are April through mid-May and October through November. April delivers 20°C (68°F) highs and relatively low humidity (59%). May warms to 25°C (77°F) with still-comfortable humidity (63%). October brings 23°C (73°F) and the first truly crisp days after the summer humidity breaks.

November is cooler at 17°C (63°F) with clear skies and peak autumn foliage. Avoid June and July for the rainy season (tsuyu, 200mm in June, 157mm in July, humidity 72-74%). Avoid August for oppressive heat (33°C / 91°F) and typhoon risk.

Best Time to Visit Osaka for Lower Prices and Fewer Crowds

Osaka’s cheapest and quietest months are January, February, June

September. January-February bring cold but dry weather (10-11°C, 44-59mm rain) with hotel prices 40-50% below cherry blossom peaks. June is the rainy season: you’ll deal with 200mm of rain and high humidity but find empty Osaka attractions and bargain hotel rates. September brings typhoon risk and residual summer heat but the lowest tourist numbers of the year outside January. If you’re flexible and don’t mind weather uncertainty, these months deliver the best value.

Best Time to Visit Osaka for Cherry Blossoms and Autumn Leaves

Cherry blossoms (sakura) typically bloom in Osaka from March 25 to April 7, with full bloom lasting about a week. Book hotels 3-6 months ahead for this period. The best viewing spots are Osaka Castle Park (free, 4,000+ trees), Kema Sakuranomiya Park along the river, and the Japan Mint (open to the public for one week only during bloom).

Autumn foliage (koyo) peaks around November 15-30 at Minoo Park, a 30-minute train ride north of the city. Both seasons bring premium hotel pricing and crowded sites. Check the Osaka events calendar for festival dates that overlap with these seasons.

Best Time to Visit Osaka for Festivals

Osaka’s biggest festival is the Tenjin Matsuri (July 24-25), one of Japan’s top three festivals with boat processions and fireworks. The Osaka Marathon runs in late November (registration required months ahead). New Year (December 31-January 3) brings temple visits (hatsumode) at Sumiyoshi Taisha and Shitennoji, though many restaurants close for 2-3 days. Summer fireworks displays (hanabi taikai) light up the Yodo River on various dates in July and August, with the Naniwa Yodogawa Fireworks Festival in early August drawing 500,000 spectators.
